Abstract

465,365. Silencers; casings. McSTAY, G. Dec. 23, 1935, No. 35559. [Class 7 (ii)] In an engine having a padded cover E arranged over the valve cover A so as to silence the noises coming therefrom, the chamber between the two covers is utilized as a resonance silencer for the air intake to the carburetter. In the form shown, airintake pipes C lead to a conduit B formed integral with the valve cover A, a pipe D leading from the conduit to the carburetter being formed with holes D<2> communicating with the chamber between the covers A, E, which acts as a resonator to damp out sound waves due to the flow of air. The cover E consists of a layer of felt between two sheets of metal. A crank-case breather H, formed with internal baffles and a gauze cover H<2>, may be connected to the conduit B immediately under the pipe D.
