Abstract

768,167. Air intake silencers ; crankcase ventilator ; supercharging. COOPER'S MECHANICAL JOINTS, Ltd., and STREETE, C. M. April 15, 1955 [Nov. 4, 1954], No. 31874/54. Class 7 (2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A combined suction air intake silencer and filter for an I.C. engine has an expanding inlet duct 1 having a flared mouthpiece 2 and antiresonance holes 1a leading to an acoustic chamber 6 surrounding an annular filter element 10 located above an oil reservoir 17. Cleaned air is discharged through a second acoustic chamber 12 beneath a casing cover 7 before traversing an outlet duct 15. Flow through the crankcase breather may be silenced by connecting the breather to the chamber 6. By mounting the mouthpiece 2 on a vehicle so that the mouthpiece faces the wind, a pressure boost may be produced. In a modification cleaned air is discharged through a side outlet in the casing cover.
