Abstract
768,615. Inlet silencers. WILMAN, S. April 18, 1955 [April 20, 1954], No. 11164/55. Class 7 (2). In an inlet silencer, for an I.C. engine and for damping out the noise produced by the pulsations of the induced air, comprising a casing divided by at least one resilient sounddamping diaphragm 5 into two chambers 6, 7, both chambers communicate with the atmosphere but the chamber 6 also communicates with the air inlet of the engine. The displacement of the diaphragm compensates at least partly the vacuum created at the air inlet and by the induction stroke of the engine. As shown in Fig. 1, the diaphragm 5, of synthetic rubber or other oil and petrol-resistant material, is corrugated and clamped by the peripheral edge thereof between the flanges 3, 4 formed on the cup-shaped shells 1, 2 comprising the casing. The chamber 6 is connected by a pipe 10 to the engine carburetter and by a pipe 11 to atmosphere; an air filter and a check valve may be fitted to the pipe 11. A number of holes 12 are provided in the wall of the chamber 7. In a modification, there are three diaphragms 13, 14 and 15, Fig. 2, the diaphragm 14 having a central hole 16, and the diaphragm 15 being provided with a number of holes 17 the aggregate cross-sectional area of which is greater than that of the hole 16.
