Abstract

780,235. Intake silencers. GENERAL MOTORS, Ltd. Feb. 14, 1956 [Feb. 21, 1955], No. 5086/55. Class 7(2) [Also in Group XXVIII] In a silencer including resonator chambers, an air pipe 18, 27 having a bend intermediate the ends thereof lies wholly within the casing 1 of the silencer and communicates with the chambers; the ends of the pipe respectively open into a vertical wall and a horizontal wall of the silencer. As shown; the cylindrical casing 1 includes a domed part 2, a dished, lower, end wall 5, and an annular plate 6 provided with a downwardly extending flange 7 to which is attached the casing 8 of an oil-bath air-cleaner, the outer casing 9 of the cleaner being secured to the casing 8 by means of interengaged screw-threaded portions 10, 11 of central tubular parts 12, 13 of the two casings. Interposed between flanged portions of the parts 12, 13 is a sealing washer 14, and the lower end of the part 13 is closed by a cup-shaped member 15 carrying a nut 16 by which the silencer is secured to a mounting bracket. The wall 5 is formed with a central, flanged aperture 17 in which is fixed a straight pipe 18. and spaced above the wall are annular walls 19, 23 forming resonator chambers each communicating with the pipe 18 by way of openings 20, 26. Secured to the upper end of the pipe 18 is a curved pipe 27 the upper end of which terminates within and intermediate the ends of a pipe 29 adapted to be connected to the air intake of an I.C. engine and secured intermediate the ends thereof in the domed casing part 2. The space between the wall 23 and the part 2 constitutes a further resonator chamber which is in communication with the upper end of the pipe 27 by way of the pipe 29.
