[Class 7 (ii)] Air is induced, by the movement of the vehicle or by a pump, into a flared opening 2 leading to a helical passage, formed by a baffle 5, where it mixes with the exhaust flowing from the engine by a pipe 6. As shown the passage is formed annular by a conical lining 3 and the baffle is perforated at 8, but these details may be omitted, the baffle 5 having a small axial passage throughout. The outer casing 1 may be parallel-sided. Air may also be injected into the opening 2 by the downward stroke of the engine piston.
