Abstract

233,160. Shore, W. E. May 26, 1924. Spray carburettors. -In a system wherein the carburettor is enclosed in an airtight chamber to which air is supplied by a pump, means are provided to connect the pump inlet and discharge so as to form a by-pass to control the pressure of the air, a throttle valve being arranged in said by-pass and interconnected. with the engine control valve. The carburettor 1, Fig. 1, is enclosed in a casing 2 connected to the intake manifold 3 and containing a pump 4, although the pump may, in a modification, be located in a separate casing. The pump is preferably of the double rotor type as shown in Fig. 3, and the intake thereto is from the atmosphere through a pipe 8, Fig. 1. A branch 8<1> on the pump inlet is provided with a throttle valve 23 connected, through arms 20, 22 and an adjustable link 24, with the engine throttle 17. A valve 12 may admit air should the output of the pump be insufficient, and a relief valve. 14 is provided in case of back-fire. A rotatable valve 26 may admit air to the manifold from a by-passage 25 at high speeds. Fuel is supplied to the carburettor through a pipe 27 and the fuel tank is put under the pressure in the casing 2 by a pipe 28. When the valve 23 is open, air from the casing passes into the pump intake 8 and the pressure is reduced. In the modification where the pump and carburettor are in separate interconnected chambers, the throttle valve 23 is fitted to a branch 29 of the pipe 9' which conveys the air from the pump to the carburettor chamber. The pump inlet 8" is supplied with air entering through holes 31 and around the sides of baffle plates 32, 33 at the bottom of the casing 4<1>. The valve 23 may be actuated independently of the engine throttle valve, any excess of pressure being relieved by the valve 14.
