Abstract

732,296. Treating charge ; spray carburetters. MAKER, D. P. April 29, 1953, No. 11864/53. Classes 7(2) and 7(3). Exhaust gas in an amount determined by a valve 8 is diverted from the exhaust pipe 7 through a pipe 10 containing a filter 11 to the inlet manifold 9 supplied with fuel air mixture by a carburetter 2 and part of the filtered exhaust gas is led through a pipe 26 to the float chamber 1 to heat the fuel therein. The valve 8 may be controlled by a diaphragm 13 actuated by intake manifold suction so that the valve closes with increase of suction, and a manually operated override control 17 may also be provided. The filter 11 may be of the water or oil-bath type and a valve 12 is actuated from the accelerator pedal 6 or from a separate dashboard control 21 to cut off the supply of exhaust gas to the inlet manifold at idling. The pipe 26 contains a non-return valve 28 and excess exhaust gases and fuel vapour are returned to the induction pipe 4 through a pipe 27.
