Abstract
1,159,061. Treating exhaust gases; spray carburetters. B. WALKER. Aug.3, 1966, No.34748/66. Heading FIB. [Also in Division G1] Exhaust gases are passed through a by-pass 27, Fig. 1, containing an exhaust treating apparatus 28 at idling or deceleration. The exhaust gas flow through the main exhaust pipe 2a and bypass 27 is controlled by valve 20 actuated by a suction operated diaphragm 16 controlled by a valve 14 operated from the throttle linkage. A valve 24 in the by-pass 27 may be linked to the valve 20. During normal running valve 20 is wide open and most of the exhaust gases flow through the main pipe 2a to silencer 5. When the throttle valve is closed lever 10 operates valve 14 to connect intake manifold suction pipe 13 to pipe 15 to operate device 16 to close valve 20 and by-pass the exhaust gases through the treating device 28, which may include a filter, absorbents, chemical agents, or catalysts. The exhaust gases in the by-pass 27 are also cooled by a finned device 26. In Fig. 6 (not shown) the by-passed gases are cooled by an evaporative cooler (36), comprising a cotton wick supplied with water from a device (37b) under the control of a suction operated valve (39) and solids are separated in a centrifugal separator (34) prior to entering the treating device 28. In Fig. 7, the suction in pipe 15 is also transmitted through pipe 75 to a device 73 which actuates a valve 72 controlling an air bleed into the carburetter idling passage 66 to cut off the idling fuel during over-running. The passage 75 is cut off when engine speed drops to idling by a speed-operated valve 75a to avoid stalling. In Fig. 9 a time-delay device 112 is associated with the valve 14 to ensure that opening of the valve 20, Fig. 1, is delayed during opening of the throttle valve. At full throttle a stop 119 on the throttle linkage ensures immediate opening of the valve 20. In Fig. 8 (not shown) a speed responsive device (76) operated from the vehicle speedometer ensures treatment of the exhaust gases in a low speed range as well as at idling.
