Abstract

1,028,274. Crankcase ventilation systems. T. W. BOSLEY. March 18, 1963 [March 16, 1962], No. 10574/63. Heading F1B. Crankcase gases are fed through a pipe 46 to the intake manifold 32 on the downstream side of the throttle valve 38 under the control of a valve 78, Fig. 2, actuated by the suction on the upstream side of the throttle valve. Valve 78 is opened by a diaphragm 74 connected through pipes 90 to a point 98 immediately above the throttle valve, a bimetallic valve 100 in chamber 94 cutting off the suction when the engine is cold. The chamber 94 is heated by a pipe 44 leading from the exhaust pipe 45 to a choke control device 42 on the carburetter. Water vapour and impurities in the crankcase gases are condensed and collected in chamber 52, Fig. 1 (not shown) and a baffle 108 directs blow-back flames away from the crankcase connection 46. Overpressure in the crankcase, e.g. at wide throttle opening, is relieved through a flap valve 116 preferably situated within the carburetter air filter 40 and excessive intake manifold suction at overrunning opens an air intake valve 122 to prevent excessive suction building up in the crankcase. A restricted passage 104 by-passes the valve 78 when it is closed.
