Abstract

1530511 Treating IC engine charges NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 16 March 1976 [25 March 1975] 10449/76 Heading F1B A combination of a fuel tank venting system and an air/fuel ratio control system of an I.C. engine in which the fuel tank venting system comprises a liquid-fuel tank 30 and passage means 32, 32a, 70 through which fuel vapour from the tank is conducted, by suction, to an induction pipe 16 of the engine 10; and the air/fuel ratio control system comprises a mixture-forming device 22, sensing means 78 for sensing the overall air/fuel ratio of all air and fuel fed into the engine and control means 80, 26 comparing the sensed overall ratio with a desired air/fuel ratio and causing the device 22 to form a mixture having an air/fuel ratio such that the overall fuel ratio is equal to the desired fuel ratio. The combination maintains an overall stoichiometric ratio of air to fuel so that an exhaust gas reactor 28 which contains a three-way catalyst operates at maximum efficiency. Vapour from tank 30 is separated from fuel droplets in trap 36 and passes to canister 40 where it is absorbed in e.g. activated carbon 58. There is an air inlet port 50 and filter 44. Air and fuel vapour are drawn through an orifice 72 at a rate controlled by valve 60 which is actuated by flexible diaphragm 64, subject to the depression in duct 70 which opens into pipe 16 at a point which is upstream of throttle valve 24 when the valve is closed and is downstream of the valve when the valve is open. Mixture forming device 22 is a carburetter or fuel injection system and includes an air or fuel valve which is adjusted by an actuator 26, which responds to a signal generated by a comparator 80 in which a reference signal is compared with the output signal from exhaust gas sensor 78 which produces a signal representative of the amount of e.g. air in the exhaust gases.
