Abstract

1,171,754. Spray carburetters; treating charge. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. Dec. 14, 1966 [May 9, 1966; May 16, 1966; May 19, 1966], No. 56029/66. Heading F1B. Fuel vapour escaping from the fuel tank 1 or float chamber 20 while the engine is stationary is absorbed in an absorption chamber 50 containing activated charcoal or silica gel, which vapour is subsequently desorbed from chamber 50 and delivered through pipe 18 to the intake manifold 40 when the engine is running. A valve 60 in the vapour pipe 17 from the float chamber is open when the engine is stationary but is closed by intake manifold suction when the engine is running, the fuel vapour then returning through pipe 19 to the carburetter. The upper end of chamber 50 has an air inlet pipe 16 leading from the carburetter filter, through which pipe air is sucked into chamber 50 by intake manifold suction during running of the engine to desorb the fuel vapour therefrom. A valve 70 Fig. 3 (not shown) in the pipe 18 returning the desorbed vapour to the intake manifold is opened by a diaphragm actuated plunger (79) actuated by exhaust back pressure. In a modification chamber 50 is initially fed with hot gas to vaporize the fuel therein and then cooled by a supply of cold gas.
