Abstract

444,175. Instruments for deaf persons. SONOTONE CORPORATION, 19, West 44th Street, New York, U.S.A. Aug. 13, 1934, No. 23374. Convention date, Aug. 11, 1933. [Class 40 (iv)] In a bone-audition hearing-instrument comprising two magnetic structures separated by a gap and set in relative vibration by audio frequency currents in suitable windings, one magnetic structure supported against a hearing inducing bone is a resilient member connected at its ends to the other magnetic structure, which is relatively of substantial mass, thereby supporting it in a floating vibrating condition. The resilient member is connected at its centre to a casing one portion of which is shaped to fit the bone structure of the user. The instrument comprises a member 7 adapted to be held against the bone structure of the user and carrying the electromagnetic unit which is enclosed by a cover 8, the instrument being carried by a head strap 16 connected to a U-member 13 pivoted to the sides of the cover. A resilient magnetic strip 26 is secured by screws 60 at its centre wider portion 51 to a metal plate 56 moulded into the member 7, and at its narrower ends supports a magnet structure comprising a plate 27 and polepieces 28 secured together by members 34 screwed to the strip 26. After the magnet structures have been assembled the pole faces are ground level with the corresponding faces of the members 34, the gaps being subsequently adjusted by screws 37. The gaps are preferably about ¢ inch long but gaps up to 3 inches in length may be used. The ends of the windings 41 are connected to lugs 46 riveted to sockets 47 in the member 7 which receive pins 6 terminating the microphone and amplifier circuit. In a modification, a single winding has a core screwed into the centre of plate 27 for gap adjustment. The surface of the member 7 is shaped to fit the bone structure of an individual user, or members 7 may be shaped for different types of bone structure and the most suitable selected for the individual concerned. Alternately, as shown in Fig. 15, the surface is of a shape generally conforming to the bone structure and has a number of projecting portions 162 which intimately engage the bone structure.
