Magnetic instruments ; loudspeakers ; diaphragms. - An electromagnetic device for operating the diaphragm of a loud-speaker or the like comprises a polarized reed projecting from a face plate on one pole a permanent magnet, a speech winding associated with the other pole for actuating the reed and means for connecting an intermediate point of the reed to the diaphragm. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, angle irons 10. 11 are attached to the two poles of a permanent magnet 9, one angle iron 11 carrying the reed 18 and the other 10 a bifurcated pole shoe 12. Two adjustable pole-pieces 16, 17 are mounted in the pole shoe and surrounding the pole-pieces are speech windings 14. 15 mounted on insulating material 13. The reed 18 projects into the gap between the pole-pieces 16, 17, and an intermediate point of the reed is connected to the centre of the diaphragm 4 by a rod 19. In a modification, Fig. 14, the reed 43 is carried by a resilient plate 42 carried by a shoe 37 mounted on one pole of the permanent magnet 33. A suitable diaphragm is a large paper cone having a slotted flat rim which forms the subject-matter of Specification 252,685, and the whole apparatus is mounted in a flat casing having perforated back and front covers. Specification 253,080 is referred to.
