Abstract

Magnetic instruments.-In a sound-reproducing device, such as a telephone receiver, the diaphragm 21 is connected to a rigid member 12 supported at its ends and constructed so as to have no natural period of vibration within the range of audible frequencies. The member 12 may be a tube of aluminium, having an armature 14 placed over its middle portion and being flattened there so as to lie in the air gap between the poles of magnets 3, 4. The armature 14 is sufficiently thick to cause the member 12 to bend only in the end portions. The member 12 is supported in pillars 10 and may be adjusted by means of screws 16, 17. An actuating coil 18 surrounds the armature 14. The conical diaphragm 21 is formed with a flattened base 24 of flexible material such as mica so that the conical portion, which is connected rigidly to the armature 14 by a link 20, vibrates as a whole. The magnets 3, 4 are held on a bridging member 6 secured to a bracket 8 on the member 9.
