Abstract

553,955. Telephone instruments. GOLDSCHMIDT, R., Oct. 28, 1941, No. 13891. [Class 40 (iv)] A deaf-aid bone-conduction apparatus comprises in combination a magnet with speech windings 17 and a ferro-magnetic armature 10 so formed that it may be surgically inserted beneath the skin 13 of the user, the skin forming a resilient barrier between the armature and the magnet poles so that the impulses conveyed to the armature by the speech currents may be transferred by it to the skull. In the form shown, the armature is provided with a peg 11 which is driven or screwed into, or is in contact with, the mastoid bone 12. The armature may consist of a perforated plate, or it may be slotted as shown in Fig. 5 to form two springs of differing vibration frequencies, for example of about 800-1500 cycles per second. It may be plated with non-corrosive material or be made of or clad in stainless steel of moderate chromium content and in an annealed condition. According to the Provisional Specification, the armature may be made hollow in the form of a flat drum; also, a defective tonal response of the deaf subject may be corrected by a resonance introduced into the electric circuit by a reed bridging the poles of the magnet with a small leakage gap.
