Magnetic instruments.-In an electromagnetic mechanism for actuating a sound reproducing diaphragm of the type embodying a balanced armature mounted upon a central support about which it oscillates resilient means, yielding a high control force, is provided at a point external to the region embraced by the magnet poles. The Figure shows an armature a mounted upon a lateral locating strip b of very thin manganese between pole-pieces cd. The diaphragm driving rad g is attached to a reed h which, exerting a high control, permits the mass of the armature to be increased without adverse effect. The locating strip h is preferably notched at the centre to further reduce eddy currents.
