Abstract

436,969. Two-stroke-cycle engines; starting. PETTERS, Ltd., and PETTER, P. W., Westland Works, Yeovil, Somerset. April 24, 1934, Nos. 12369 and 34525. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (v)] In engines in which the suction effect created by the exhaust gases is relied on to induce scavenging and charging air into the cylinder, the absence or weakness of such suction at starting or low speeds is compensated for by air or mixture compressed in the crank case. The transfer from the crank case may be controlled by a screw-plug valve D<2> operated manually, or by a rotatable sleeve-valve H operated manually, or automatically by an engine-driven governor. The sleeve-valve has two sets of ports. One set affords a through passage from the crank case to the cylinder for air drawn into the crank case past a flap-valve. The other set opens a passage from the crank case to atmosphere when the first set is closed against the cylinder. In a modification, the crank case may be provided with a breather-valve N which during normal running is kept open by an engine-driven centrifugal governor o<1> At starting or during slow running, the governor is inoperative, and the valve N acts as a non- return valve admitting air which is compressed in the crank case and afterwards transferred to the cylinder.
