Abstract
405,308. Spray carburetters. FRASER, R. P., 20, Margravine Gardens, Barons Court, London. July 28, 1932, No. 21303. [Class 7 (iii).] Fuel issuing from an orifice in an unatomized condition is atomized by a stream of air supplied under greater pressure than the liquid, delivered as a hollow cone, with a wide base having its apex located a substantial distance beyond the liquid orifice which is located centrally in the base. The sprayer as applied to an oil burner may comprise a body 2 having a central oil passage 1 leading to a broad cupped end face around which is an air chamber hood forming between it and the conical end of the body 2 an obtuse conical air passage the angle of the cone with the cupped surface being about 90‹ and the apex of the cone forward of the oil orifice. The body portion 2 is coned at 5 to engage a recess in a seating piece 16 against which it is held by a cap 17. The jet body and hood are housed in a steel barrel 12 fixed in a hollow aluminium box or shell secured to the furnace front 14 by an intermediary piece 15 to which air and fuel pipes are connected. The oil passage may be of the form shown having a narrow intermediate passage between the wide parts. The broad surface into which the oil passage leads may be flat or cupped. The apparatus may be used as a carburetter in which case the pressure may be due to suction beyond the jet and atmospheric pressure behind it. The hood and jet body may be axially adjustable e.g. by a rack and pinion adjustment on the hood, or the hood may be pneumatically adjusted by connecting it to a movable pressure sensitive member in a chamber subjected to variable pressure such as that caused by engine suction. The hood may be fixed and the body adjustable for example in the case of the use of the jet body as the injection to a Diesel engine.
