Abstract

645,908. Liquid-fuel burners. HAWORTH, L. May 5, 1948, No. 12438. [Class 75(i)] [Also in Group 1] A liquid-fuel burner, such as for a gas turbine engine for aircraft, giving an idling fuel spray and a main fuel supply comprises a body portion 10, 11; with a central chamber 17 receiving the idling fuel and with annularly disposed chamber means 18 receiving the main fuel; a first plate member 21 fitted at the end of the body 11 has a central swirl chamber 32 into which the idling fuel passes by tangential ducts 35 to discharge therefrom by a convergent conical portion with a discharge aperture 33 this portion being formed by a conical boss on the plate 21; the main fuel from the annularly disposed passages 18 passes to an annular groove 19 and thence by ports 36 in the plate 21 to an annular groove 37 in a second plate member 22 and so by tangential grooves 38 to an annular convergent swirl chamber 39, provided by a conical wall of the second plate, and discharges at the aperture 40. The angle of spray from orifice 40 is greater than that from orifice 33. The assembly is held together by sleeve 23 screwed on body 10 and locked in vernieradjusted position by lugs 25a of a spring ring 25 fitting between castellations 10a and 23a. A sleeve 24 fitted at the front end of body 11 facilitates assembly of the plates 21, 22. Filters 20 are provided comprising cylindrical plugs threaded along their length and formed with open ended recesses 20a at each end, and a series of tapering longitudinal grooves 20b cut on the periphery, the deep ends of the grooves 20b communicating with the recesses 20a at each end alternately. Slight angular adjustment of the spraying nozzle is obtained by attaching the nozzle by tubes 12 and 13 to a fitting 55 having a partly spherical seating 55a. Cooling air is supplied through ports 27, Fig. 2, to an annular space 26 and is directed, through ports 28 and 29, around the sprays. Specification 645,696 is referred to.
