Abstract

557,899. Atomizers. TRIER, V. A. Sept. 3, 1942, No. 12480. [Class 69 (iii)] In a liquid atomizer of the kind wherein spray from a nozzle is broken up into a mist by impact with a shock surface within an atomizing chamber from which the mist passes to the atmosphere, the relative positions of the nozzle and the shock surface are variable. As shown in Fig. 1, a spray of liquid is projected from a nozzle 4 by compressed air passing through a pipe 5 and up a pipe 6 communicating at its lower end with a supply 2 of liquid within the atomizing chamber. The spray impinges upon two plates 7, 8 adjustable angularly to vary the extent to which the jet is atomized. Baffles 10 which may be adjustable in inclination, may be provided to eliminate large drops of liquid from the mist passing to the outlet 3. In a modification, Fig. 3, one adjustable plate 11 only is provided and the flow of mist to the outlet 3 is assisted by induced air passing through a duct 15. The duct 15 may be replaced by an air blast. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the jet nozzle 20 may be rotated to vary the angle of impingement of the spray upon a fixed plate 19.
