Abstract

671,853. Spray-producers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 23, 1949 [Nov. 30, 1948], No. 30047/49. Class 69 (iii) [Also in Group XI] A nozzle body includes a vortex whirl chamber having a central discharge orifice, passages including metering orifices for supplying liquid at high tangential velocities to the outer circumferential portion of the chamber so that liquid is discharged in the form of a hollow cone, a nozzle end cap with a second discharge orifice coaxial with and spaced from the first orifice and forming a discharge outlet for the liquid cone and passages for supplying gas to the discharge outlet whereby an annular sheet of gas at high velocity is directed into contact with at least one surface of the spray cone so as to obtain an even distribution of liquid about the nozzle and maintain a substantially stable cone angle. Oil fuel is fed through a passage 22, Fig. 2, cylindrical strainer 39, circumferential passages 42 in a central member 28 to an annular recess 43, and then through circumferentially spaced orifices 54 in a disc 50 to an annular recess leading through tangential channels 59 to a vortex chamber 51a. The fuel issues from an outlet 57 and passes through an adjustable annular orifice 61 between a pintle end disc 44a and a nozzle plate 52. Air, which may be heated, is fed through a passage 23 and cylindrical strainer 32, a portion passing through passages 36, circumferential passages 60 to the discharge orifice 61. The remainder of the air is directed through channels 49, chamber 48 and orifice 55 to the outlet 61. Instead of passing on both sides of the spray cone, a further embodiment Fig. 5 shows air directed through channels 72 and 80 to the outside of a cone issuing from a vortex chamber 78. Alternatively, air is fed through a cylindrical strainer 94, Fig. 6, passages 91, 101, 102 and against an adjustable pintle disc 97a to the inside only of a conical spray emitted between the said disc and an orifice in the plate 107.
