Abstract

299,280. Weeks, W. R. June 1, 1928. Air-pressure sprayers.-In apparatus for spraying paint or lacquer in which an air compression pump and one or more expansion chambers are arranged to deliver air continuously to spray liquid by combined suction and pressure, the paint container is mounted externally of the apparatus and the air pressure is supplied by a passage external thereto. An air pump b, Fig. 2, surrounded by an air chamber v has forward of it an expansion chamber v' which delivers air through pipes f, j<1>, f<2> to a liquid container o and to an auxiliary expansion chamber k to force liquid through a pipe j to an atomizing nozzle l. In a modification, the expansion chamber k is above the paint vessel instead of in front of it. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the auxiliary expansion chamber is omitted and the nozzle l mounted directly on the expansion chamber o<1>. Air from the chamber v<1> is delivered through a pipe into a cylinder t mounted on the apparatus in which is received a paint can r. Liquid is forced therefrom through the pipe j into the nozzle l. In further modifiaations, the air chamber communicates directly with the can r without the tube f, and the exterior air chamber v may be omitted. Air may be delivered from a continuously driven compressor into an expansion chamber o<1>, Fig. 11, which may be provided with a normally open outlet 15 which is closed by a valve 16 by the pressure of the fingers on a lever 17 when the sprayer is being operated. To regulate the spray an atomizer, Fig. 7, may be employed in which two superimposed perforated washers l<1>, m<1>, are employed the washer l<1> being secured to the nozzle and the washer m<1> to a union so that they may be relatively adjusted and secured in the adjusted position by screws. The nozzles employed may have a single orifice or multiple converging or diverging outlets or may terminate in a slot to form ribbon shaped sprays.
