Abstract

131,175. Nicol, E. W. L., and Schofield, H. Aug. 24, 1918. Spray burners.-A fuel 'burner or atomizer is provided with separate inlets for different fuels spaced apart on an injector barrel in which the fuels commingle before being projected from the burner. In one form, Fig. 2, inlets a<1>, a<2> supply the different fuels to a central hollow block e, in which they are atomized and projected through. the barrel b by steam or compressed air from a jet a<3>. An adjustable air-inlet device d<2> surrounds the fuel inlet a<1>, and air or steam may be forced into a space surrounding the barrel b and leading to a space around a nozzle c. Spiral mixing vanes f are provided in the injector funnel e, in the middle of the barrel b and inside the discharge nozzle c. These vanes have alternately a right and left handed twist. Inclined ribs or vanes f<3>, Fig. 4, set oppositely to those inside the discharge nozzle are formed either outside the discharge nozzle or inside the extremity of a bell-shaped extremity g. A flange a<4> is provided for securing the burner to a furnace door by screw-bolts passing through holes a'. In the form shown in Fig. 5 there is one inlet a<1> for liquid fuel and the other a<2> for powdered fuel, one or more steam jets a<3> being fitted for spraying the fuel. and a sleeve h<2> for controlling the air inlets. One steam inlet may be used behind and another in front of the oil inlet. The oil may be supplied through a sight feed and the solid fuel passed through any suitable grinder and conveyer before being fed to the burner.
