379,967. Axle-box sealing devices. MATTHEWS, E. F., Elm Cottage, Watford Road, Wembley, Middlesex. Jan. 21, 1932, No. 1896. Convention date, Jan. 21, 1931. [Class 12 (i).] A dust packing for vehicle axle bearings consists of an annular collar 4 of yielding, resistant to wear, microcapillary material, such as leather, surrounded by a macro-capillary material 5, such as felt, which supplies a limited amount of lubricant to the collar 4. The latter has a flange 11 clamped between to the axle-box wall 3 by a plate 12, and the flange 11 may be riveted to the plate 12. A spring 9 surrounding a case 7 for the felt 5 presses the collar 4 against the axle 1. The collar 4 may be crimped at 15 and the oilretaining ring 14 between the collar 4 and the axle 1 may be omitted. The case 7 or the material 5 alone may be sufficient to press the collar on the axle.
