Abstract

517,226. Stuffing-box substitutes. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd., and DOUGHTY, E. H. July 20, 1938, No. 21502. [Class 122 (v)] A packing device, e.g., for sealing the end 5 of an axle box comprises a divided or segmental ring or collar 8 in one or more portions which is applied radially into the space between the stationary end 5 and a wheel 7 or other revolving part, with the sides of the ring pressed into contact with the box and wheel respectively by a spring ring or rings 10 or a divided ring of wedge-section with the parts drawn together by bolts to exert pressure on the rings 8. In a modification, one side of the ring 8 bears on a corrugated or perforated rubber &c. ring interposed between the ring 8 and one of the parts 5, 7. Specifications 25764/13, [Class 122 (v)], and 469,110 are referred to.
