Abstract

792,327. Railway-vehicle axle-boxes. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd. July 26, 1956 [Oct. 22, 1955], No. 30254/55. Class 12 (1). In a railway vehicle axle-box and axle assembly comprising a housing 4 containing spaced roller bearings mounted on an axle 2, the bearing space is sealed at its outer end by an annular member 15 of channel section fitted in the end of the housing 4 and having a close running clearance with respect to the outer peripheral surface of an apertured retaining plate 9 secured to the end of the axle 2. A circular cover plate 14 is secured by a ring of bolts 17 to the member 15. The inner end of the bearing space is sealed by an annular member 15<SP>1</SP> of channel section having a running clearance with respect to a ring 24 secured to the axle adjacent a shoulder thereon. In a modification, shown in Fig. 2, the member 15 has a stepped outer flange 19 which fits directly into a recess 29 in the end of the outer race 26. In a further modification, an inspection cover 16 is detachably secured to the end of a housing 4 by bolts 25, Fig. 3. Specification 760,304 is referred to.
