Abstract

862,834. Axle-boxes. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. April 20, 1959 [June 20, 1958], No. 13350/59. Class 12 (1). A dust-guard and oil-seal for axle-boxes, comprises an oval metal disc 27 with a central aperture, carrying at its inner periphery a circular resilient seal 28 and at its outer periphery an oval resilient seal 30. The seal 28 has a lip 29 projecting angularly and inwardly towards an axle 15. The seal 30 has angularlyprojecting lips 31, 32 directed inwardly and outwardly, respectively, and has flanges 33, 34 thereon. The seal is mounted in a casing 18 which is inserted in a dust-guard slot 11 of an axle-box 10, and is guided and prevented from rotating by a pin 20 carried by the casing 18 and engaging lugs 35 attached to the disc 27. The casing 18 is formed in two parts 22, 23, which are flanged at 24 and have a seal 25 bonded thereto. Excessive axial movement of the axle may cause the flanges 33, 34 of the seal 30 to engage the casing 18 and serve as a cushion.
