Abstract
760,304. Axle-boxes. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd. May 12, 1955 [Dec. 20, 1954], No. 36697/54. Class 12 (1). In a railway &c. axle-box comprising a selfcontained inner bearing unit 1, consisting of tapered roller bearings 9, 10 located within a housing 8 in the form of a sleeve or barrel, and an outer casing 2, provided at the top with a spring-supporting seat 7 and at opposite sides with horn guides 6, 6, the said bearing unit and casing are so constructed that they can be separated and removed from one another by relative vertical movement followed by an axial one. As shown, the casing 2 is of substantially octagonal cross-section interiorly, with flat top and bottom faces 4, 5, and the bearing housing 8 has its exterior surface shaped at top and bottom to a truncated triangular form to provide flat top and bottom faces 29, 30 and oblique side faces 25, 25, the face 4 being adapted to rest on the face 29, preferably with the interposition of a wear pad 3, and a considerable vertical clearance 27 being permitted between the opposed faces 5, 30. The housing 8 is also formed at opposite ends of the flat upper face 29 with upwardly-projecting flanges 28, 28 which overlap, with clearance, the respective ends 31, 32 of the casing 2 and are of a depth less that the said clearance 27; similar flanges 28a, 28a may also be formed at the ends of the bottom face 5 of the housing 8 so that the latter may be used in an inverted position. The bearing housing 8 preferably has a central inwardly-directed rib 17 against which the outer roller race rings 12 are abutted, the inner rings 13 abutting against a distance ring 19 on the axle 18 and being secured in place by a ring 22, located at the inner end of the axle-box and supported against a shoulder 23 on the axle, and a retaining plate 20 at the end of the axle. Several modifications are described ; for example, the outer casing may be of inverted U-shape, and the retaining flanges 28, 28 are formed on the casing 2 so as to overlap the ends of the housing 8.
