793,918. Axle-box bearings. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK. Nov. 19, 1956 [Nov. 23, 1955], No. 35255/56. Class 12 (1). In a railway-vehicle axle-box comprising a casing 1 supported on an axle 2 by cylindrical roller bearings 3, an axial thrust ball bearing 6 has its inner race secured to the shaft 2 and its outer race secured to a sleeve 10 which has limited axial freedom with respect to the casing 1. The sleeve 10 carries a prestressed spring 14 located between a shoulder 12 and a screwed ring 13. After a predetermined movement of the axle and bearings towards the left, further movement is resisted by abutment of the spring 14 against a ring 18 secured to a cover 17. This may cause the spring 14 to compress and move away from the ring 13 a distance a, Fig. 2. Longitudinal grooves 15 in the ring 10 engage correspondingly formed longitudinal keys on the cover 17. The spring 14 consists of several cup springs. In a modification, the outer race of the bearing 6 is fixed in the case 1 and the inner race is attached to a sleeve 10, Fig. 3. The spring 14 is disposed between an abutment ring 13 and a shoulder adjacent the inner race of the bearing 6. In a further modification, shown in Fig. 6, a helical spring 14 is located within the sleeve 10.
