Abstract

904,303. Bearings. GOUDGE, A. E. (McCallum, N. C.). Sept. 30, 1960 [Oct. 21, 1959], No. 35673/59. Class 12 (1). In a thrust bearing assembly means are provided for preventing the rotation of an inner race 6 relatively to a non-rotatable shaft 1. The assembly has a pair of axially-spaced taper roller bearings 3, 3<SP>1</SP> mounted on the non- rotatable shaft 1 and has a sleeve 2 having inwardly-directed lugs 4 which are abutted by one outside race 5 of the bearings, the other outside race 5<SP>1</SP> being engaged by a member 11 which threadably-engages the sleeve 2 and on being tightened transmits axial pressure to the bearing 3. The member 11, having a flange 11a is locked to the sleeve 2 by studs 12. The shaft is increased in diameter at 7 and a spring 8 mounted thereon urges two floating washers 9 against the inner races 6 to provide a cushion for radial shocks received by the bearings. The drawing shows a vehicle track wheel 14 having a flange 15 by which it is attached by studs 16 to the sleeve 2. The inner faces are held against rotation by the washers 9 which are connected to the shaft 1 so as to allow axial movement of the washers but prevent rotation thereof. The washers may have protruding studs 17 fixed thereto which enter holes in the portion 7 of the shaft, alternatively the studs 17 may be held in bores in a face 7a of the portion 7 so that domed heads 17a of the studs are slidably received by holes 18 in the washers. The spring 8 may be replaced by a series of helical springs housed in bores passing through the portion 7. Specification 889,176 is referred to.
