387,040. Axle - box sealing devices. MATTHEWS, E. F., Elm Cottage, Watford Road, Wembley, Middlesex. Oct. 5, 1931, No. 27649. Convention date, Oct. 6, 1930. [Class 12 (i).] An axle-box 1 has an oil-retaining ring 15 to prevent excessive lubricant from reaching the dust packing which is in two parts 6, 7, clamped round the journal by a spring 9. A packing plate 13 of leather, rubber, or the like and preferably in one piece is inserted between the dust packing and the outer wall of the dust chamber and covers the joints in the dust packing 6, 7. Leaf springs 16, 17 press the packing and the plate 13 against the wall 4 of the dust pocket. The wall 4 is detachable from the axle-box 1 and the hole therein is sufficiently large in one direction to allow it to be passed over the ring 15 when tilted. When the plate 13 is in one piece and is not elastic it has a partial slit to enable it to pass over the ring 15.
