Coal-cutting machines.-The haulage drum or sprocket of a coal-cutting or like machine is driven from the motor of the machine through change-speed gearing and worm gearing, the change speed gearing including two friction clutches and two positive clutches operable so as to provide four forward and four reverse cutting speeds and two forward and two reverse flitting speeds for the drum &c. In Fig. 1, the gearing is shown out of correct alignment for clearness, pinion D actually meshing with pinions E, Y and pinion W being adapted to mesh with pinion X. Integral pinions A, W, are slidable on the motor shaft 6 which drives the pinion D either through pinions W, X, or reversely through pinions A, B, C; pinions C, X, are integral. For cutting, the pinion D drives through pinion E, two-speed gearing F, G, or B', C<1> controlled by a dog clutch 4, gears H, J, K, L, friction plate clutch 1, and two-speed gearing M, N, or Z, A<1>, controlled by a dog-clutch 3, to a worm O. For flitting, the pinion D drives through pinion Y, friction plate clutch 2 and the two-speed gearing M, N, or Z, A<1> to the worm O. From the worm O, the drive passes through worm wheel P, gears Q, R, clutch 7, Fig. 2, gears S, T and a gear U engaging an internal gear in the haulage drum V. In a modification, the pinions A, W, are rotatable independently on the shaft 6 and are simultaneously slidable so as to bring dog clutch elements thereon alternately into mesh with similar elements on the shaft 6. The Provisional Specification describes transmission gearing in which the change-speed gearing between the motor and the clutch 1 is replaced by a train of reduction gearing and in which the reversing mechanism is provided between the clutch 3 and the worm O.
