[Class 68 (i)] Driving mechanism for a mining machine comprises a driven shaft carrying a loose sleeve on which is splined a slidable gear, a friction clutch for coupling the sleeve to its shaft, a parallel shaft driven from the first shaft through reduction gearing and having a sleeve thereon integral with a wide gear constantly in mesh with the slidable gear, and a clutch for coupling the sleeve and wide gear to their shaft and designed to transmit less power before slipping than the first clutch. The motor shaft 2, tnrough gears 3, 4, 6, 7, clutch 10, and bevels 15, 16, drives the cutter-chain sprocket 18 and also, through gears 22, 23, drives a loader, etc.; the sprocket 18 may be at the top or bottom of the machine, or be duplicated, and such driving gearing may be provided at each end of the machine, or a vertical chain jib, adapted to cut a core of coal, may be provided at one end, with or without an undercutting jib at the other end. The shaft 2 also drives through bevels 25, 26, a shaft 27 to which a sleeve 28, splined to a slidable gear 31, may be connected by a clutch 30, the shaft 27 being connected by gears 34, 35, to a shaft 36 to which a sleeve 37 may be connected by a clutch 40 adapted to slip under less power, sleeve 37 carrying a wide gear 38 meshing with gear 31 whereby the latter may be driven at different speeds ; the operating means for clutches 30, 40, are interlocked. The gear 31 drives a gear 42 directly or reversely though gear 41 and an idler 44, and thence through shaft 57, slidable gears 54 ... 56, and gears 51 ... 53, drives a lay shaft 48 at variable speed; shafts 57, 48, carry gears 60, 61, adapted, through other gears, to drive the haulage chain sprockets.
