Abstract
263,310. Black, W. C. Jan. 7, 1926. Coal-cuttting machines. - A coal-cutting machine has arranged longitudinally thereof a change speed gear comprising a central shaft extending between the motor and the gear head and two countershafts co-operating with the central shaft and symmetrically located on either side thereof. As shown, the central shaft 7 is driven from the motor through gearing 10 and carries a loose pinion 21 meshing with gears 18, 18<1>, on the countershafts 8, 8<1>, and a keyed sliding member comprising pinions 22, 23 and clutch dogs 24; this member may be moved by rotation of a shaft 26 acting through a pinion and a rack, whereby the countershafts may be driven through the clutch dogs 24 and gears 21, 18, 18<1>, or through gears 23, 19, 19', while a third speed is obtained by rotating a shaft 30 to move gears 20, 20<1>, keyed to the countershafts, into mesh with the pinion 22. The countershafts 8, 8<1> act through gears 15, 15<1>, 16, a return shaft 17 and bevel gearing 37, 6, to rotate the shaft 14 which drives the cutter bar or cutter chain. By removing a cover plate 36, the gears 15, 15', 16 may be changed to give further speed changes. In a modification, the countershafts 8, 8<1> are driven from the motor through gearing and drive the shaft 7 by change speed gearing as above, the shaft 7 driving the shaft 14 through bevel gearing.
