Abstract
308,213. Sullivan Machinery Co., (Assignees of Holmes, M. P.). March 19, 1928, [Convention date]. Coal-cutting machines.-In a mining-machine adapted to slide on the mine floor and housing a fluid-actuated motor comprising intermeshing rotors which drives both the cutting-mechanism and a reversible feed-operating number cooperating with flexible feeding means, the motor is arranged midway between the top and bottom of the machine, and determines the height thereof, and the initial member of the feed-driving connections is adapted to be connected directly to either rotor so as to allow reverse of the feed. Reversing means are also provided for the cutter-driving mechanism. As shown, a fluidpressure motor as described in Specification 211,475, comprising spirally-toothed intermeshing rotors 10, 11, has a pinion 23, 24, 65 or 66 on each end of each rotor shaft, the pinions at each end of the motor being spaced so as to rotate in parallel planes. Short shafts 28, 70, are arranged between the rotor shafts at opposite ends of the motor and each carries a slidable pinion 27 or 69; the pinion 27 is adjustable by a shipper 32 to engage either of the pinions 23, 24, whereby the shaft 28 is driven in either direction and the pinion 69 is adjustable by a similar shipper to engage either of the pinions 65, 66, whereby the shaft 70 is driven in either direction. The shaft 70 drives the cutter chain 4 through bevel and spur gearing and the shaft 28 drives the feed drum or sprocket through variable-speed gearing and a clutch, all as desscribed in Specification 277,621. A single handwheel 92 controls both the variable-speed gearing and the clutch. Specification 233,365 also is referred to.
