244,694. Sullivan Machinery Co., (Assignees of Holmes, M. P.). Dec. 19, 1924, [Convention date]. Coal-cutting machines.-A mining- machine has a reversible driving means such as an electric motor and a feed operating member driven from the motor through change-speed gear housed in a longitudinal bore of the machine frame, a single set of guide members co-operating with the feed operating member. The guide members are arranged on vertical axes on each side of the feed operating member. The armature shaft 13 of an electric motor carries a gear 15, Fig. 8, adapted to be connected by an axially slidable internal gear 23 with a coaxial gear 22 on a short shaft 20 which then drives he cutter chain 5 through gearing 50, 49, 51, 52. The gear 23 is adjusted by a bell-crank lever 26 engaged by a member 37 which is moved transversely from either side of the machine by rotaion of one of the caps 34, 44 provided with pins 5, 45 engaging cam slots 36, 46. Fast and slow transmission gearing comprising friction clutches 5, 107, Fig. 3, is driven from a pinion 60 on the opposite end of the armature shaft, and drives a gear 86 which transmits motion to the feed sprockets 8; the clutches 75, 107 may be operated by rods with oppositely-threaded, halfround ends engaged by a common reverselythreaded nut which controls the rods.
