Coal-cutting machines.-In a mining machine which is advanced by a drum &c. winding on a flexible cable &c., driving means for the drum &c. comprise two coaxial gears, either or both of which may be driven at will, one gear being connected to a pinion and the other gear carrying planet gears meshing with the pinion and with an internal gear which communicates the drive to the drum &c. As shown, the motor 11, through pinions 24, 2.5, drives gears 26, 27, each of which contains a disc clutch through the clutches, the gear 26 may drive a shaft 28 carrying a worm 60 which drives a worm wheel 75, while the gear 27 may, through gears 54, 55 and a worm 61, drive a worm wheel 71 in the opposite direction. The worms 60, 61 differ in pitch. The worm wheel 71 is rigidly connected to a pinion 80 in mesh with planet gears 78 carried by the worm wheel 75, the planet gears also engaging an internal gear 88 connected to a pinion 66 engaging an internal gear 65 in the feed drum 12. A low speed is obtained by driving the worm wheel 71, a high speed is obtained by driving the worm wheel 75, and a further speed by simultaneously driving both worm wheels; further variations are given by slipping the clutches which are operated by handles 89, 90 on threaded rods 91, 92 engaging nuts carried by pivoted roller-bearing yokes 94. Guide rolls 98, 99, 100 are provided. In a modification which shortens the machine, the worms are oppositely threaded and, with their driving gears 26, 27, are arranged on opposite sides of the axis of the worm wheels 71, 75, the gears being driven by a common pinion on the motor shaft.
