Abstract
190,188. Marks, E. C. R., (Goodman Manufacturing Co.). July 13, 1921. Coal-cutting machines. - In a coal-cutting machine, means other than the draft means are provided to afford a direct connection between the rotatable feeding element and the cutter member to effect pivotal movement of the latter. In the machine shown, the cutter-chain support C is pivotally held by a nut 18, Fig. 4, in a sleeve 17 integral with the gear casing B, and the haulage drum 45 is mounted on the sleeve 17; guide pulleys 47, 48 are provided, the pulleys 47 being slidable on their spindles 47<a>. The cutter support C is held longitudinally of, or at right-angles to, the machine body by engagement of a pivoted latch 53 with one of three slots in the casing B, or the latch may be raised to engage slots in a flange of the haulage drum, so that the latter may effect pivotal adjustment of the cutter. The gear casing B is pivotally connected to the motor casing A and is adjusted by a screw 101; the base of the casing B is so formed as to engage the mine floor in all positions. The motor.shaft 23 drives the cutter chain through gears 22', 24, bevel gearing 26, a clutch controlled by a lever 40, pinion 34, gear 21, spindle 20 and sprocket 19; a self-aligning thrust bearing is provided for the bevel gearing 26. The haulage drum is driven from the motor shaft through a pinion 60 and gear 61 driving through sun-and-planet gearing 63, Fig. 5, on to a shaft 62, the planet gears engaging internal teeth on a drum 64 controlled by a band-brake 65 manipulated by a bell-crank lever 71b, link 42 and hand-wheel 43 so as to vary the driving speed; the shaft 62 drives a slidable gear 72, either directly through pinion 75 or indirectly and in a reverse direction through idler pinion 76, and the gear 72 drives through worm 80, worm wheel 82, Fig. 4, clutch 86, pinion 83 and gear 90 on the haulage drum. The slidable gear 72 is controlled by a longitudinally movable shaft 78, Fig. 3, and lever 79, Fig. 2, and the clutch 86 is controlled by a lever 94 and arm 93, Fig. 2. The haulage drum 45 may be driven manually by inserting a bar into one of a series of recesses 55 in the drum flange.
