Caol - cutting machines. - A coal - mining machine, more particularly for room and pillar working, comprises a motor casing 7 and a gear housing 8 both adapted to rest on the mine floor, the housing 8 having a passage 17 open to the front 21 of the machine and to the side 20 opposite to the direction of advance, the cutter chain 4 carrying cuttings into the passage and co-operating with the passage wall to effect discharge of the cuttings; part 25 of the passage wall is approximately concentric with the driving sprocket 16 of the cutter chain and defines a restricted portion of the passage. The motor 6 drives the cutter chain through an elevated lay shaft 29, bevel gears 42, 46 and a clutch sleeve 51 having fingers 54 engaging apertures in gear 46 and adapted to engage recesses in a sleeve 50 which is in clutched engagement with the cutter-chain driving sprocket 16 so that the latter may be easily replaced; the clutch sleeve 51 is controlled by a rock shaft 59 operated through segmental gears 61, 62, shaft 63 and handle 64. The haulage drum 12 is driven through gearing 40, 41, shaft 39, change-speed planetary gearing 38 and a worm wheel 36 driven by the lay shaft 29; the change-speed gearing is controlled by a clutch actuated through a central shaft 29a and a rock shaft 29<c> by a rearwardly-extending lever. A retarding drum 13 is also provided. The cutter chain moves forwardly substantially in alignment with the side of the machine.
