The driving mechanism comprises a pinion n adapted to be clutched either to a driven worm wheel g or to a gear m; the sprocket a is driven at low speed through gearing g, l, j, k, m, n, o, p, q, or at high speed through gearing g, n, o, p, q. The driving worm f is actuated either from the main engine or from an independent engine. Channels &c. in the machine frame guide the haulage chain when it is employed for adjusting the cutter jib.
