226,939. Tugwood, R. J., (Jeffrey Manufacturing Co.). Nov. 22, 1923. Variable-speed ratchet gearing.-In a coal-cutting machine the kerf cutting mechanism which comprises a cutter chain 33 having renewable cutter bits 34 and working in guide ways in a wingable arm 32, is mounted substantially centrally between the tractor axles, and the cutter arm 32 can be rotated relatively to the main frame by means of a feed rope which is passed round a winding drum 46 and sheaves 59 on the plate 27 and which is held at one end by a lug 58 on the main frame. The cutter chain 33 passes round a sprocket wheel 35, Figs. 4 and 7, keyed to a shaft 36 driven through bevel gearing 38, 39 by the motor 41, and the winding drum 46 is operatively connected by a friction clutch to a shaft 44 driven through worm gearing by a shaft 50 which is rotated by ratchet gearing from the shaft 36. The ratchet gearing comprises a pawl 52 carried upon a rocker arm 53 which is pivoted about the axis of the shaft 50 and is actuated by an eccentric rod 54 and eccentric 55 on the shaft 36. A mask 60, also pivoted about the axis of the shaft 50 and adjustable by means of a handle 61 is provided to control the effective stroke of the pawl 52.
