COAL-CUTTING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N 16, 1920 Application filed November 13, 1919. Serial No. 337,845.
may be regarded as a reconstruction of the machine ,known in the market as the Sullivan machine, being designed to adapt that machine to conditions met with in certain collieries In the reconstruction of the Sullivan machine a winch and wire rope have been substituted for the chain haulage of the Sullivan construction, provision being made for leading the rope directly to a point of anchorage or around a guide and thence in the reverse direction, whereby conveniently to effect the travel ofthe machine in either direction. The speed-reducing train between the motor and the barrel is simplified and provision i made for effecting conveniently variation of the rate of feed. Thus, the speed reducing train of the present machine comprises simply a pair of spur gears, a pair of bevel gears, a crank and link and a pawl and ratchet mechanism associated with which latter is an adjustable mask.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2a plan showing diagrammatically so muchof the machlne as is necessary for the understanding, of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the rotor spindle or driving shaft fast on which is the spur pinion 2 meshing with a s,pur wheel 3 on a counter-shaft 1 that carries at its free end a bevel gear 5 meshing with a bevel gear 6 on a vertical shaft 7 rotatable in bearing members 8, 8'.
Fast on the upper end of the shaft 7 is a. crank disk 9 to which is adjustably fitted a crank pin 10 connected by a link 11 to a rocking pawl-carrie 12 mounted on the dotted lines.
spindle 13 of the barrel or winding drum 14 and carrying a pawl 15 engageable with a ratchet wheel 16 fixed to rotate with the said barrel or drum 14. A spring-pressed detent 17 serves to prevent reverse rotation of the ratchet wheel 16 and therewith of the barrel so as to prevent unwinding of the rope 18 from the barrel.
As will be understood, step by step rotary feeding movements are communicated to the barrel from the roto spindle or driving shaft 1 through the intermediary of the mechanism above described.
o vary the rate of feeding movement,
pel'lod of engagement of the ratchet wheel I.
16 by the pawl 15. v
When the plate 19 is turned to such a position as to silence the pawl 15-, or lift it out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 16, a
lug or tongue 20 on the plate 19 acts on the.
detent pawl' 17' to disengage it from the ratchet wheel 16 so that the latter will be freed. v
The plate 19'may be set in. any desired position of angular adjustment by means of a nut 21 on a screw-threaded spindle" assing through a slotin said plate 19 and fitted into the post 22 on which the detent pawl 17 is pivoted. Th o t 22 passes through a curved slot in the plate 19 which permits said plate to be adjusted to different working positions.
The rope 18 maybe led from the barrel or drum 14 in the direction shown in full lines or it may be led reversely around either of two guide pulleys 23 as represented in What we claim is:
A feeding mechanismfor a coal-cutting machine of the type referred to, comprising, incombination, a winding drum serving t receive a haulage rope, a driving shaft, speed-reducing train between said driving shaft and said drum, said train 1neluding a, pair of SpliI' gears, a air of bevel names to this specifieation in the presence bf gears a crank and link, a paw -carrier and two subscribing Witnesses.
pawl, a ratchet 'Wheel rotating with said drum, an adjustable shield "for the awl, whereby the working thro f the atter may be varied, and means for holdimg saaid shield in different workin ositions.
In testime y whereof we haVesignedpur- ALEX. STEVENSON. I ARTHUR LOGAN. Witnesses'i ISABEL R0LL0, A1 NE,L. WATT.
