To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. JEFFREY,
citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mining-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates more especially to mining machines of either the side cutting type or the vertical cutting type, or both; the invention providing means for cutting a series of horizontal thin or narrow kerfs at distances apart suitable for the subsequent breaking down of the coal, and also for blocking off the coal face by an addi tional series of vertical kerfs to facilitate the breaking down, preserve the coal principally in large blocks and diminish the amount of slack. The vertical kerfs are.
formed by the same kerf cutters or saws as are the horizontal kerfs, but for the former purpose the saws are adjusted to vertical position. The invention consists in the parts and combinations thereof hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In order to make the invention more clearly understood 1 have shown in the accompanying drawings means for carrying it into practical effect, without limiting my improvements, in their useful applications, to the particular construction which, for the purpose of explanation, I have delineated, it being understood that the invention may be embodied in other forms of construction. In the said drawings- Figure l is a plan view of a mining machine embodying the invention, the cutters being shown in full lines as adjusted for horizontal kerf-cutting, and in dotted lines as adjusted for vertical kerf-cutting.

In these bearings are mounted trunnion sleeves 4, which extend beyond the inner faces of the bearings, and on the inner ends of the said sleeves are mounted movable bearings 53, 6. Cast with these bearings are the arms 7 of a yoke or frame 8 having a longitudinal bearing 9, which may be adjusted to a horizontal position or to positions, in the longitudinal vertical plane of the machine, more or less inclined from the horizontal. In this adjustment the sleeves 4 may remain fixed in the bearings 3 or may turn with the bearings 5, 6. The adjustment is effected by a hand wheel 10 at the outer end of the machine fixed on a short shaft 69, the latter being mounted in a bracket bearing 70, fixed on the bed frame. On the shaft 69 is a fixed spur gear 71 which meshes with a spur gear 72 fixed on a shaft 11. This shaft carries and rotates a worm 12 beneath the bearing 6. Fixed on this bearing is a segment 13 of a worm wheel which is engaged and operated by the worm to raise or lower the yoke 8 about the trunnion bearings at 41, 4.
1 1 is a sleeve fitted by bushings 7 3 to turn within the bearing 9 and having attached to its inner end a yoke 15. 16 is a gear wheel fixed on the sleeve 14, and engaged v by a pinion 17 on an adjusting shaft 18. The
latter is mounted in a bracket bearing 19 attached to the bearing 9, and has fixed on it an adjusting hand wheel 20. By turning the latter the yoke 15 may be rotated 90 or more to shift the cutters or saws 21 from horizontal to vertical positions, or to any desired angle, as may be required. The said saws are arranged in a series or in multiple and are clampedby spacing sleeves 22, washers 23 and nuts 24: on a shaft 25. Two of said sleeves 22 act as journals, for the rotation of the shaft 25, within bearings 26 at taehed to the yoke 15. 26 is a latch engageable with the teeth of the gear 16 for holding the yoke and the saws against accidental movement.

During the entering out of the machine it is fed toward the coal face, whether the cutters be set horizontal orv vertical, and thereafter, if the cutters have been entered whilehorizontal the machine is thereafter fed along the coal face from right to left cable passes downward from the drum and under a guide sheave or pulley a l mounted in a caster block or frame 45, having a tubular spindle rotatably mounted in the bed frame. The arrangement is such that the cable passes downward through the said spindle and under the pulley. The cable can be taken off in any desired direction within a range of about 180, either toward theface of the coal when the machine is to be fed inward at the right rib to make the entering cut, or away from the machine along the, face of the coal to the left rib when the feed is to be parallel, or substantially so, with the coal face. For any such directions of feed the otherwise free end of the cable is anchored by a jack or in any other known manner. The drum has attached thereto a gear wheel 46 and these parts are mounted'on a shaft 47 turning in bearings '48 on the bed frame. 49 is a pinion loosely mounted on the motor shaft 29 (see Fig. 1) and having a clutch member 50 on its inner face. 51 is a spurgear fixed on the outer end of a sleeve 52 which surrounds the shaft 29 loosely and is mountedin the bearing 53 on the bed frame. On the inner end of the sleeve 52 is fixed a spur gear 54. 55 is a short shaft mounted in a bearing 56 on the bed frame. On its outer end is fixed a gear wheel 57 and on its inner is fixed a pinion 58. This pinionmeshes with the loose gear 51 and the gear 57 meshes with the loose pinion 4-9. 59 is a double Clllizll member slidablykeyed 011 the shaft 25 and engage able at will with either the clutch element 50 or the clutch element (30 on the outer end of the sleeve 52, by means of a shifting hand lever'61 and suitable connections. li e the gearing described the gear wheel 51; can be driven at either of two speeds from the motor and shaft 529. This means of feeding, by the hand wheel 20, is available, within its limits of movement, to move the cutting devices rclative to the bed frame when they are adjusted and in operation for making horizontal kerfs.

What I claim is:
1.111 a mining machine, the combination of suitable supporting and driving means, narrow -kerf cutters arranged in multiple, and means for adjusting the same to cut into or across the face of the coal in horizontal planes, and in planes at an angle to the horizontal5t11e said parts being mounted on a frame constructed and arranged to slide and be propelled on the mine floor in any direction, irrespective of a track; and means for propelling said frame toward the coal face, and across the same, substantially as set forth.
2. In a mining machine, the combination of suitable supporting and driving means, a rotatable shaft, a plurality of narrow parallel kerf cutters arranged in series along the said shaft and all rigidly secured thereto in common, whereby all of said outters are similarly held permanently fixed in common relation to the axis of said. shaft and are all similarly bodily adjusted when the shaft is adjusted, means for bodily adjusting said cutter shaft from a vertical line to inclined axial lines to cause the cutters either to form kerfs in horizontal planes across the face of the coal or to form kerfs inclined to the horizontal across said face, means for holding the cutter shaft rigidly in position, and power devices for moving the cutters bodily through the coal while forming kerfs either in horizontal planes or in inclined planes.

In a mining machine, the combination of suitable supporting and driving means adapted to be advanced, bodily, longitudinally, narrow parallel kerf cutters arranged in multiple, means for adjusting the cutters either to cut across the face of the coal to form kerfs in horizontal planes or to lie in planes inclined to the horizontal and transverse to the lines of advance of the supporting means to form kerfs inclined to the horizontal, or to vertical positions where they form parallel vertical kierfs, means to hold the cutters in position after adjustment, and means for swinging the cutters vertically around a horizontal transverse axis.

In a mining machine, the combination of a suitable support, narrow parallel kerf cutters arranged in multiple, a cutter frame having an element carrying the cutters and rotatable vertically around an axis in a longitudinal vertical plane, and a second element mounted on said support and arrange to vibrate around a transverse horizontal axis, means for adjusting the first said frame element around said longitudinal axis, means for adjusting the second frame element around the transverse axis, power mechanism on the support, power devices mounted on the transverse axis, and cutter driving devices actuated by said power devices and rotating bodily around the last said axis.

In a mining machine, the combination of suitable supporting driving means, narrow kerf cutters arranged in multiple, and means for adjusting the same to cut into or across the face of the coal in horizontal planes and in planes at an angle to the horizontal, the said supnorting means comprising a vertically swingable frame, and means for giving a feeding motion to the same; substantially as set forth.

In a mining machine, the combination of a bed frame, and multiple kerf cutters movably mounted thereon and adjustable to different angles relative to the horizontal and relative to the coal face; the said bed frame being constructed and arranged to slide and be propelled on the mine floor irrespective of a track; and means for propolling said frame toward the coal face and across the same, substantially as specified.

I11 a mining machine, the combination of a bed frame, multiple kerf cutting saws movably mounted thereon and adjustable together around a longitudinal axis and around a transverse axis to different angles relative to the bed frame and to the coal face, and a cable feed mechanism for moving the bed frame parallel with the planes of the saws; substantially as set forth.
8. In a mining machine, the combination of a bed frame, a cutter frame mounted on the bed frame on a longitudinal axis, multiple parallel kerf cutters mounted on the cutter frame, means for adjusting the cutter frame around its axis to change the angles of the cutters, means for feeding the cutters upward and downward, and means for feeding the bed frame horizontally; substantially as set. forth.
9. In a mining machine, the combination of a bed frame, a cutter frame mounted 011 the bed frame on an axis which may be directed toward the coal face, the said cutter frame having a part which is movable relative to the said axis, multiple kerf cutting saws supported on the said movable part of the cutter frame, means for adjusting the cutter frame about its said axis, means for feeding the movable part of the cutter frame relative to its supporting part, and means for feeding the bed frame horizontally; substantially as set forth.
