A portion 39. of the casing for the. motor 29 extends upwardly and outwardly therefrom and forms a bearing support for various; parts of the cutting element 1. A cutter bar supporting member 48 is journalled in the portion 39 for pivotal movement with respect thereto about a transverse axis. from the portion 39 of the casing of the motor 28 and abuts a shoulder 42 formed in the cutter bar supporting member 40. A ring 43 is fastened to said cutter bar supporting member and abuts the inner face of the flange 4| to prevent lateral movement of said cutter bar supporting member 4 0 with respect to the portion 39. This ring may be held; to said cutter bar supporting member by any suitable means, but as herein shown said ringis held to said cutter bar supporting member by means of cap screws 44 (see Figures 4 and 51) The cutter bar supporting member 48 extends forwardly from the portion 39 of the casing for the motor 29 and has a cutter bar 45 fixed thereto having a cutter chain 45 movable thereabout. A vertically disposed arcuate rack 41 is fixed onfthe-forwardmost portion of said cutter bar supporting member and has internally cut teeth facing the rearward end of said cutting element. Said arcuate rack is engaged by a pinion 48 on the end of a, transverse shaft 49 driven from the motor 29 ina manner which will hereinafter be morefullydescribed. Thus rotation of the pinion 48 causes movement of the arcuate rack .41 and moves the cutter bar 45 about the axis ofconnection of said cutter bar supporting member to the portion 38 of said motor casing.
Referring now in particular to the means for driving the. cutter chain 46 from the motor 29, said motor is provided with a bevel armature pinion 58 which'meshes with and drives a bevel geaitil ona. transverse shaft 53. A. spur gear Said guides include a mem- A flange 4| extends outwardly 55 is fixed on said transverse shaft and meshes with and drives a spur gear 56 on a transverse shaft 51 located above the transverse shaft 53. The transverse shaft 51 is journalled within a bored portion 58 of the cutter bar supporting member 48 by suitable means herein shown as ball bearings of an ordinary construction (see Figure v A member 88 is keyed on the transverse shaft 51 and journalled in the bored portion 58 of the cutter bar supporting member 48 and is held to said transverse shaft by means of a nut 62. A collar 65 abuts the outer surface of the cutter bar supporting member 48 while a sprocket 53 is fixed on the member 58 and is interposed between the outer end of said collar and a flange t4 integral with the outer end of said member. The sprocket 83 meshes with the cutter chain 46 for driving said cutter chain upon rotation of the motor 29.
Referring now in particular to Figures 5 and 7 and the details of the mechanism for driving the pinions 31 and 48 for moving the cutting element along the guides 38 or for raising or lowering said cutting element about the axis of the transverse shaft 51, a bevel pinion 61 is fixed on the inner end of said transverse shaft and is held thereto by means of a nut 68. This bevel pinion meshes with and drives a bevel gear 69 keyed on a longitudinally extending horizontal shaft 10. A spur pinion 1| is and drives a spur pinion 13 on a longitudinally extending stud shaft 14 located above the shaft "iii. A spur gear 15 is keyed near the opposite end .of the longitudinally extending horizontal shaft '18 adjacent the inner end of a bearing support 16 for said shaft. The spur pinion 13 meshes with and drives spur gears 11 and 13. on opposite sides thereof, while the spur gear 1'5 meshes with and drives spur gears 18 and 88 on opposite sides thereof respectively in opposite directions to the spur gears 11 and 18.
The spur gear 11 is fixed on the rearward portion of a casing 8| for a clutch 32. The casing 8| is freely mounted on a shaft 83 and is journalled in a bearing support 84. The clutch 82 is a friction clutch of an ordinary construction so will not herein be described in detail and has operative connection with the shaft 83 for driving said shaft through a clutch collar 85 feathered on said shaft. 7
Similarly the spur gear 19 is fixed on a casing 85, freely mounted on its hub in a suitable bearing member and a bored portion of the hub of said casing forms a bearing for the shaft 83. The casing 88 forms a driving member for a clutch 88 whichv is a. suitable friction disc clutch of an ordinary construction so will not herein be described indetail. vThe clutch 88 is operatively connectible with the shaft 83 for driving said shaft by means of the clutch collar 85.
When the clutch collar 85 is in 'a central position on the shaft 83 intermediate the clutches 82 and 88, neither of said clutches have driving engagement with said shaft. Thus when the clutch collar 85 is'moved adjacent the clutch 82, the shaft 83 is driven in one direction through said clutch andwhen the clutch collar 85 is moved adjacent the clutch 88, the shaft 83 is driven in an opposite direction through the clutch 88. A suitable system of levers is provided to move the clutch collar along the shaft 83 to operatively engage either the clutch 82 or the clutch 88 with the shaft 83, which systemof levers is of an ordinary construction so is not. herein shown. Thus a means has been provided for. driving the shaft fixed on the shaft 18' and meshes with V transverse shaft- 49.
1M keyed on clutch 91 which clutch is a friction clutch of an ordinary construction and is operatively conclutch collar 99 feathered to said shaft. c Similarly the spur gear at is mounted on a clutch casing I06 for a clutch .IM. This clutch is operatively connected to the longitudinal shaft 96 by means of the clutch collar 99 in a usual manner for driving said shaft. The construction of the clutches 91 and")! is to the construction of the clutches 82 The opposite clutch also may be connected to said shaft to drive said shaft in an opposite direction upon disengagement ofcsaid first mentioned clutch from said shaft. t
A worm I 93 (see Figures 5 and 6) is keyedon the longitudinal shaft 96 near the forward end thereof and mesheswith and drives a worm gear the transverse shaft 49 for driving said shaft. It may thus be seen that rotation of the shaft 49 drives the pinion 48 which moves the rack 41 and cutterbar 45 with respect to said pinion about the axis of the shaft 57 to vertically move said cutter bar. The" direction of vertical movement of the cutter-bar 45 may be reversed by engagingeither of the clutches 91 or in! with the shaft 95.
It maythus be seen that tical cut in the mine wall, are driven from a single motor so that the longitudinal and vertical movements are independent of each other and so that both ofisaid movements .may be independently reversed without reversal of the motor 29.
The motor 23, which operates thehorizontally is electrically interdisposed cutting element 5, I connected with the motor29 which operates the extensible and retractable cutting element .1 by
means of a switch 1050f an ordinary construe controller I06 controls inclusive, which and that said means tion and diagrammatically illustrated in Figure 8, so that both of said motors may be operated from a single controller I66 and so that only one of these motors may be operated at a time.
the operation of the motors 23 and 29in a usual manner and obtains power fromva cable reel I01 through suitable conductors ina usualmanner so that the details of operation and construction Referring now in particular to Figures 9 to 14, figures diagrammatically show the machine of my invention in various cutting positions, the horizontal cutter bar 27 is sumped said cutterbar is cutting across the coal face, the cutter bar 45' is in a retracted position in the guides 30.7 When it is desiredto make a vertical or shearing cut, movement of the cutter, bar' 27 across the face is stopped and the cutter bar 45 is usually raisedby the pinion 48 and arcuate rack 41 until the upper forward end of the cutter bar abuts the mine roof as indicated by dotted cutting element from the coal.
