  • Fig. 10 the machine is shown with its parts in a position for transportation from place to place about the mine.
  • the turntable 36 is in an angular position in which the cutter bar 68 is substantially parallel to the track 27 and is lifted by the ram 41 into a vertical position in which said cutter bar is clear of said trackway.
  • This vertical position of the cutter bar may, of course, be obtained by suitable adjustment of the sliding frame 93 instead of by operation of the ram 41, although the latter is preferable.
  • the turret 94 is then swung to carry the cutter bar from the full line position into the dotted line position indicated by the letter B, and the truck is finally moved backwardly upon the trackway to bring the cutter bar into the dotted line position C, thereby completing the cut, all in accordance with the well known arcwall method of undercutting. It will be observed in this connection that the vertical adjustability of the cutter bar, by reason of the vertically movable turntable 36 and the slide 93, permits the elevation of the cutter bar into a position above the tops of the rails, as shown in Fig.
  • this mechanism can be operated upon the arc-wall principle to cut a kerf beneath the top of the track byswinging the turntable supporting the cutting mechanism upon the vertical axis of the support 41 so that the cutter bar 68 is outside of the trackway as shown in Fig. 14, then swinging the cutter bar 68 to a position making an acute angle with the trackway and then lowering it onto the bottom, then running the machine forward toward the face while making the sumping out, then stopping the machine and swinging the bar across to the opposite side of the trackway, and finally making the withdrawing cut.
  • This is of course a very substantial advantage.
  • ' cut may be made at substantially any level between the positions indicated by the letters D and E, that by thereafter raising the turntable a cut can be made at substantially any level between the positions E and F, and that by rotating'the turret 81 through 180, so as to invert the same and bring the cutter bar uppermost, a cut can similarly be inserted at substantially any level between the positions G and H.
  • the vertical adjustability of the cutter bar by means of the turret S1 and slide 93 can be supplemented by a vertical adjustment of the turntable 36 by means of the ram 41, thereby increasing the range of adjustability.
  • This adjustability of the turntable 36 permits the cutter bar to be swung into a position substantially at right angles tothe trackway so as to operate upon a face or wall extending parallel to said trackway, as in opening a room neck.
  • said outter bar may be adjusted and operated for the purpose of either shearing or undercutting said face, as will, it is thought, be clear without further explanation.
  • the machine may be operated s a mounted longwall machine for the purpose of undercutting a face at either side of the trackway, 'as illustrated in Fig. 11.
  • Fig. 1:2 the machine is shown as being similarly operated upon a face disposed relatively close and parallel to the trackway 27, the angular adjustment of the cutter bar being in this case obtained by rotation of the turret 94, rather than of the turntable 36.
  • the cutter bar 68 may be arranged to swing in a plane disposed at any desired inclination, and that the distance of this plane from the axis of said turret ma be controlled by proper adjustment of the sli ing frame 93.

The invention is herein illustrated as embodied in a truck mounted machine equipped with a cutter bar and an endiess cutter chain OI the type now ordinarily in use in coal cutting machines, and piovided with im- PlOvGU means whereby said cutter bar may be adj us.ed into various operative PQSILIOUS to cut a horizontal, a vertical, or an inciined keri in any desired plane within the limits OI the machine, all while the cutting mechanism is maintained upon the truck.
tiererring to Figs. 1 and 2, the machine includes a suitable support herein in the form of a truck frame 25 mounted on wheels 26 adapted to run upon and be guided by a usual trackway 27. As illustrated, the truck is preterabiy adapted to be propelled about the mine under its own power, and to this end the axles of the wheels 26 are connected by chain and sprocket gearing 28 (Fig. 2) and driven by a chain and sprocket connection 28 with a hub 28 loosely mounted on a shaft 29 and adapted to be connected therewith by means of a suitable clutch 29. The shaft 29 is journaled in the truck body 25 and is provided with a worm gear 30 meshing with a worm 31 on the shaft 32 of an electric or other motor 33. Preferably, the motor 33 is of the reversible type and is controlled by a suitable controller 34. The worm 31 is preferably loosely mounted on the shaft 32 and may be connected therewith by-means of a suitable clutch 35. Thus, it will be seen that by proper operation of the controller 34 and clutch 35, the truck may be propelled about the mine at will under its own power and in either direction, or may remain stationary.
Carried upon the truck frame 25 is a second support herein including a turntable 36 comprising a circular plate disposed in a lane substantially parallel to the plane 0 the track 27 and truck frame 25, but mounted on the latter for angular and vertical movement with respect thereto. To this end, the truck frame 25 is formed with a cylindrical chamber or guide 37 which forms a turretbase and receives a depending cylindrical flange 38 bolted or otherwise secured to the turntable plate 36, said flange 38 substantially fitting and telescoping with the guide 37 and being adapted to turn within the same, thereby permitting the turntable 36 to be adjusted into substantially any angular position with respect to the truck body 25 and trackway 27. In order to prevent cramping of the turntable, due to eccentric loading, and consequent interference with its turning movements, antifriction bearings 36 and 36", respectively, are preferably employed, the former being carried by the lower end of the flange 38 and sliding within the cylinder 37 and the latter being mounted on the upper end of the cylinder 37 and having sliding engagement with the flange 38.
For raising and lowering the turntable 36 with respect to the truck, there is provided a hydraulic motor, ram, or jack comprising a cylinder 40 arranged concentric with the guide 37 and within the same, and a piston 41 within said cylinder and abutting, at its upper end, the lower side of the turntable 36. The cylinder 40 is preferably formed integral with the guide 37 and is provided at its under side with a removable head 42. The piston 41 may be provided with acking 43 of any suitable form. The cylinder 40 is supplied with pressure fluid through a passage 44 in the bottom wall of the guide 37, said passage communicating with a pipe 45 leading from the discharge valve 46 of a pump comprising -a plunger 47 operating in a cylinder 48. The pump cylinder 48 is provided with the usual inlet valve 49 communicating with a reservoir 50 for oil or other liquid, said reservoir being preferably formed integral with the guide 37. The operation of the piston 41 in the cylinder 40 is controlled by a suitable valve 51 interposed between the pump cylinder 48 'and the inlet valve 46, and communicating also with the reservoir 50, said valvebeing preferably of the three-way type and operable to admit pressure from the pump cylinder 48 to the ram cylinder 40, to trap liquid in said' ram cylinder, or to discharge said liquid into the reservoir 50'. Valves of this type being well known in the art, this valve is not illustrated in detail herein, as, specifically, it forms no portion of the present invention.
The pump plunger 47 is connected by a pitman 52 with a crank disk 53 on a shaft 54 journaled in suitable bearings on the truck frame 25, said shaft being provided with a worm gear 55 meshing with a worm 56 loosely mounted on the motor shaft 32. The clutch 35 is preferably double acting, and is adapted to connect either of the worms 31 or 56 to the shaft 32, or tooccupy a neutral position in which both of said worms are disconnected from said shaft, whereby the power of the motor 33 may be employed at will either to propel the truck or to raise the turntable 36 by means of the hydraulic ram 41.
Mounted on the turntable 36 for movement therewith, is the cutting mechanism including a reversible electric or other motor 67 having a casing 39 and a suitable controller 67 a cutter bar 68 carrying the usual endless chain 69 provided with cutter bits 70, and connections hereinafter more fully described for supporting, positioning, and operating the cutter bar and for actuating the cutter chain.
Mechanism is provided for rotating the turntable 36 and the cutting mechanism in order to adjust or position the latter angularly with respect to the truck and trackway, said mechanism, as herein shown, being as follows: The shaft 71 of the motor 67 is provided with a bevel gear 57 which meshes with two oppositely disposed bevel gears 58 loosely mounted on a shaft 59 journaled in brackets or arms 60 projecting from the motor casing 39. Cooperating with the gears 58 and shaft 59 is a double acting clutch 61 movable into opposite positions to connect either of said gears with said shaft, or into an intermediate position, whereby the shaft 59 may be rotated from the shaft 71 in either direction, or may be disconnected therefrom. The shaft 59 is provided with a worm 62 which meshes with a worm gear 63 on a shaft 64 journaled in a suitable bearing 65 carried by one of the brackets 60. Loosely mounted on the shaft 64, but adapted to be connected therewith by means of a clutch 66, is a worm 72 which meshes with a worm gear 73 having a sliding splined connection with a vertical shaft 74 slidably and rotatably mounted in one of the arms or brackets 60 and in a third arm 75, whereby said shaft may be held against vertical movement whilepermitting the arms 60 and 75 and the gear 73, which is positioned between them, to move vertically with the cutting mechanism and the turntable when the latter is raised or lowered by the ram 41. end of the shaft 74 is a pinion 76 which meshes with the toothed periphery of an annulus or ring 77 surrounding the cylindrical flange 38 and bolted or otherwise secured to the truck body 25. Secured to the upper face of the ring 77, and surrounding the turntable plate 36, is a second ring 78 whose edge projects beyond the toothed edge of the ring 77 and overlies the edge of the pinion 76, thereby holding said pinion, and consequently the shaft 74, against vertical movement with the turntable, and retaining said pinion in en gagement with the toothed periphery of the ring 77 irrespective of the vertical position of said turntable.
The motor casing 39 is formed at its forward end with an annular guide portion 79 Secured to the lower within which is guided for rotary movement about an approximately horizontal longitudinal axis the annular rear end 80 of a turret 81 carrying the cutter bar 68 and certain of the mechanism for positioning and actuatingrthe same.
or rotating the turret 81, said turret is provided adjacent its rear end with an internal gear 82 which is engaged by a pinion 83 fast on the forward end of a shaft 84 journaled in suitable bearings 84 on the motor casing 39. Secured to the rear end of the shaft 84 is a worm gear 85 cooperating with a worm 86 (see Fig. 5) loosel mounted on one end of a transverse sha 87 and adapted to be connected thereto by means of a suitable clutch 88. The shaft 87 is journaled in a bearing 89 carried by the motor casing 39, and has fast upon its other end a bevel gear 90 which meshes with a bevel pinion 91 on the forward end of the shaft 64. By properly operating the clutches 61, 66, and 88 the turret 81 can be rotated about its axis in either direction and to any desired extent, While leaving the turntable stationary.
The turret 81 is herein also provided with ways 92 in which is mounted, for movement transverse to said turret, a sliding frame 93. Rotatably mounted on the frame 93, for angular movement about an axis transverse to the axis of rotation of the turret 81, is a turret 94 by which the cutter bar 68 is rigidly carried. As herein shown, the frame 93 is formed with an annular guide flange 95 which is engaged by an inturned flan e 96 on the turret 94.
The axis of rotation of the turret 81 is coincident with that of the motor shaft 71, which is journaled at its forward end in a bracket or extension 97 on the motor casing 39 and has fast thereon a bevel pinion 98 which engages a bevel gear 99 rotatably mounted in the bracket 97 and held thereby against movement in the direction of its axis with respect to the motor casing. The gear 99 has asliding splined connection with a shaft 100 vertically movable with the sliding frame 93 and journaled at its outer end in a suitable bearing in said frame, whereby the operative connection between said shaft and the motor 67 is maintained irrespective of the position of said frame. The shaft 100 has herein fast upon one end thereof a pinion 101 which meshes with a gear 102 fast on a shaft 103 journaled in the frame 93 and arranged coaxial with the turret 94. Carried by the outer end of the shaft 103 is a sprocket 104 for actuating the cutter chain 69.
The shaft 103 is provided at its upper end with a worm 105 which meshes with a worm gear 106 (see Fig. 3) on a shaft 107 journaled in suitable bearings in the frame 93. Loosely mounted on the shaft 107 are relatively large and small gears 108 and 109, respectively, the former of which is connected b an intermediate gear 108 with a relative y small gear 110 on a shaft 112 journaled 1n suitable bearings in the frame 93, and the latter of which meshes directly with a relatively large gear 111 on said shaft. The gears 108 and 109 are adapted to be alternatively clutched to the shaft 107, as by clutch hubs 113 and 114, whereby the shaft 112 may be operatively connected with the shaft 107 for relatively fast and slow rotation in opposite directions, respectively, or may be operatively disconnected therefrom. The clutch hubs 113 and 114 are carried by a yoke 115 which is operated by a suitable clutch controlling handle 116. Secured to the shaft 112 is a worm 117 which meshes with a worm gear 118 on a shaft 119 journaled in the frame 93 and carrying at its outer end a pinion 120 which engages an internal gear 121 on the turret 94. By properly operating the clutches 11,3 and 114 the turret 94 may be rotated about its axis to swim the cutter bar 68 at relatively fast spee in one direction or at relatively slow speed in the opposite direction.
Loosely mounted on the opposite ends of the shaft 107, and adapted to be connected therewith by means of clutches 122, are wo'rms 123 which mesh with worm gears 124 (see Fig. 4) on shafts 125 having on their ends pinions 126 which mesh with racks 127 on the turret 81, whereby the frame 93 may be moved transversely of said turret in its ways 92.
In Fig. 10 the machine is shown with its parts in a position for transportation from place to place about the mine. At this time the turntable 36 is in an angular position in which the cutter bar 68 is substantially parallel to the track 27 and is lifted by the ram 41 into a vertical position in which said cutter bar is clear of said trackway. This vertical position of the cutter bar may, of course, be obtained by suitable adjustment of the sliding frame 93 instead of by operation of the ram 41, although the latter is preferable.
In the operation of undercutting, as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7, the turret 81 being in the position shown with the cutter bar horizontal, the machine is propelled along the trackway to bring the end of said cutter bar adjacent the face 128, and the turret 94 rotated to swing the cutter bar outwardly into the dotted line position indicated by the letter A in Fig. 6. The machine is then propelled forwardly along the trackway 27 to carry the cutter bar into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 6, thereby making the sumping cut. The turret 94 is then swung to carry the cutter bar from the full line position into the dotted line position indicated by the letter B, and the truck is finally moved backwardly upon the trackway to bring the cutter bar into the dotted line position C, thereby completing the cut, all in accordance with the well known arcwall method of undercutting. It will be observed in this connection that the vertical adjustability of the cutter bar, by reason of the vertically movable turntable 36 and the slide 93, permits the elevation of the cutter bar into a position above the tops of the rails, as shown in Fig. 10, thereby permitting the machine to be transported from place to place about the mine, but, also permits the cutter bar to be lowered into a position to rest squarely upon the mine bottom, so as to make an undercut in a plane substantially coincident with the plane of said bottom. This is a feature of considerable advantage in the art, inasmuch as in the truck mounted entry driving machines heretofore generally used it has been impossible to insert an undercut below the surface of the rails of the trackway upon which the truck travels, so that, after shooting the coal, a layer remains upon the mine bottom which must be specially removed in order to maintain the plane of said bottom before the cutting can proceed. It is to be observed that this mechanism can be operated upon the arc-wall principle to cut a kerf beneath the top of the track byswinging the turntable supporting the cutting mechanism upon the vertical axis of the support 41 so that the cutter bar 68 is outside of the trackway as shown in Fig. This is of course a very substantial advantage.
In addition to its operation in undercut ting, as above explained, it will be seen that the machine above described is capable of cutting a horizontal kerf at substantially any desired elevation. Thus, by reference to Fig. 7, it will be seen that, by vertically adjusting the slide 93 with the turntable depressed, a
' cut may be made at substantially any level between the positions indicated by the letters D and E, that by thereafter raising the turntable a cut can be made at substantially any level between the positions E and F, and that by rotating'the turret 81 through 180, so as to invert the same and bring the cutter bar uppermost, a cut can similarly be inserted at substantially any level between the positions G and H. It will thus be seen that the vertical adjustability of the cutter bar by means of the turret S1 and slide 93 can be supplemented by a vertical adjustment of the turntable 36 by means of the ram 41, thereby increasing the range of adjustability.
In the operation of shearing, which is (hagrammatically illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, the turret 81 is rotated through 90 from the position of said turret in the operation of undercutting, thereby bringing the cutter bar into a position to swin in a vertical plane, whereupon the mechanism may be operated substantially as above described in connection with undercutting to produce a vertical cut. It will be observed in this connection that, by proper adjustment of the turret 81 and slide 93, this vertical cut may be made in substantially any vertical plane (within the limits of the machine) parallel to the trackway 27 or that, by angularly adjusting the turntable 36, said out may be made in a vertical plane disposed at any desired angle to said trackway.
This adjustability of the turntable 36 permits the cutter bar to be swung into a position substantially at right angles tothe trackway so as to operate upon a face or wall extending parallel to said trackway, as in opening a room neck. When so turned, said outter bar may be adjusted and operated for the purpose of either shearing or undercutting said face, as will, it is thought, be clear without further explanation. Also, by operating the turntable to bring the cutter bar into a position transverse to the trackway, and by adjusting said cutter bar into a horizontal position, the machine may be operated s a mounted longwall machine for the purpose of undercutting a face at either side of the trackway, 'as illustrated in Fig. 11. In Fig. 1:2, the machine is shown as being similarly operated upon a face disposed relatively close and parallel to the trackway 27, the angular adjustment of the cutter bar being in this case obtained by rotation of the turret 94, rather than of the turntable 36.
While in the foregoing explanations the operation of the machine in making horizontal and vertical cuts only has been described, it will be observed that, by proper adjustment of the turret 81, the cutter bar 68 may be arranged to swing in a plane disposed at any desired inclination, and that the distance of this plane from the axis of said turret ma be controlled by proper adjustment of the sli ing frame 93.
Fromthe foregoin it will be seen that the machine above described is capable of adjustment into a position to cut a kerf in substantially any desired plane in a wall or face disposed either parallel or transverse to the trackway upon which the machine is mounted.
In the claims where adjustment on a support is referred to it is to be understood that the adjustment is to take place between the element spoken of and the support; i. e. the element is adjustable relative to the support.
In the use of such expressions as longitudinal or transverse in the appended claims, it will be understood that reference is to directions longitudinal or transverse with respect to the machine as a whole, unless a different interpretation clearly appears from the claim itself.
IVhile I have in this application specifically described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is chosen for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
