MENING MACHINE Application October 13, 1930, Serial No. 488,439 Renewed October 8, 1932 44 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in mining machines and more particularly to machines of the track mounted type having projecting kerf cutting elements thereon for cutting horizontal and shearing kerfs in the mine wall.
This invention has, among other objects, to provide a new and improved mining machine particularly adapted for operation in coal mines which may cut a horizontal kerf adjacent the mine floor and at various elevations with respect thereto, and which may also cut a vertical or shearing kerf without withdrawing the horizontal cutting element from the coal.
In carrying out my invention, I utilize a machine of the track mounted type having a cutter arm adapted to cut a horizontal kerf in the mine wall, which machine may be similar to that disclosed in a prior application, Serial No. 402,505, of William T. McCullough, filed October 25, 1929, which issued as Patent No. 1,938,850, December 12, 1933, but which has, in addition, an extensible and retractable cutting element mounted thereon for making a vertical cut when the horizontal cutting element is sumped in the mine wall.
A prior application, Serial No. 467,745, filed by me July 14, 1930, and now Patent No. 2,007,817, discloses a mining machine of a type similar to that shown in my present application. My resent application differs from my prior application, however, in the arrangement of the drive gearing and means for driving the extensible and retractable cutting element from the motor which serves as a drive means for the horizontal cutting element.
My invention may be more clearly understood with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:

Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the various figures.
Referring now in particular to the drawings, the embodiment of my invention illustrated includes a truck I mounted on track wheels 2 and 20 axles 3, having a turntable l thereon for supporting a horizontally disposed cutting element 5 adapted to cut a horizontal kerf in the mine wall and an extensible and retractable cutting element 1 movable in a vertical plane to cut a shearing 25 kerf in the mine wall.
The horizontally disposed cutting element 5 is trunnioned on the turntable 4 on trunnion supports 8 near the forward end thereof and is offset to one side of said turntable and yieldably supported at its rearward end by an adjustable support member 9 in a usual manner for adjusting the position of said cutting element with respect to said turntable.
Said horizontally disposed cutting element includes a motor l0 herein shown as an electric motor having a cutter frame ll projecting forwardly therefrom beyond the boundaries of the truck l. A cutter head I2 is suspended beneath the cutter framell and is movable vertically 4 with respect thereto on guides I3, 13 and has a cutter bar l4 projecting forwardly therefrom having a cutter chain l5 movable thereabout. The cutter bar- I4 is carried by the cutter head It for pivotal movement with respect thereto about an axis coaxial with the axis of the sprocket for driving the cutter chain l5 about said cutter bar and may be locked in various desired positions of adjustment with respect to said cutter head to permit said cutter bar to be positioned to one side of and below the level of the track for cutting a kerf below the level of the track along each side of and in front of said track. The cutter chain I5 is driven fromthe motor [0 through a suitable gear train in a usual manner which includes a bevel gear and pinion drive 16, and a vertically disposed splined shaft I1. The cutting element is similar to that shown in the aforementioned prior application of William T. McCullough, Serial No. 402,505, so will not herein be described in detail.
The turntable 4 is rotated by meansof a motor l9 on the truck I near the rearward end thereof through a suitable gear reduction mechanism which herein comprises a motor pinion 29, a spur gear 2! driven thereby, a transverse shaft 22 rotated by said gear, and a worm and worm gear drive indicated at 23 for operativeiy connecting said transverse shaft with a vertical shaft 24. A spur gear 25 is fixed at the lower end of the vertical shaft 25 and meshes with and drives a spur gear 25 which drives a spur gear 21 coaxial with the spur gear 25. The spur gear 21 meshes with teeth 23 on the outer periphery of the turntable 4 for moving said turntable.
Means driven from the motor i9 are provided for moving the truck I and mining machine about the mine which, as herein shown, include a spur pinion 29 on the end of the transverse shaft 22 which meshes with and drives a spur gear 3| on a transverse shaft 32. A sprocket 33 is fixed on the transverse shaft 32 and has operative connection with the axles 3 and wheels 2 through a suitable chain and sprocket drive in a usual manner not herein shown since it is no part of my invention.
Referring now in particular to the details of several of the novel features of my invention, the extensible and retractable cutting element 1 is supported on an extension from the horizontally disposed cutting element 5 at one side of said cutting element and is driven from the motor l9 in a manner which will hereinafter be described.
A support means 34, for supporting the horizontal cutting element 5 on the trunnion supports 8 for movement about a transverse axis, extends from the cutter frame ll across the turntable 4 beneath the extensible and retractable cutting element 1 and forms a support for the forward portion of said cutting element. A support means 35 extends rearwardly from the motor ID to one side of said motor to form a support for the rearwardportion of the extensible and retractable cutting element 1.
The extensible and retractable cutting element 1 includes a movable frame 31 having a cutter bar 38 projecting forwardly from the inner side thereof, which cutter bar is pivotally movable with respect to said movable frame about a transverse axis.
A longitudinally extending hollow tube 39 is provided beneath the movable frame 31 and forms a support for said movable frame. A rack 4| is provided on the top portion of the longitudinally extending hollow tube 39. This rack is of an ordinary construction and includes an upwardly extending member 42 which extends along the hollow tube 39 for its entire length and has pins 43 extending outwardly from each side thereof for a portion of its length. The upwardly extending member 42 may be fastened to the hollow tube 39 by any means well known to the art but is herein preferably welded to said hollow tube. Guide pieces 44 are provided on'each side of the hollow tube 39 to provide a guide for the movable frame 31. These guide pieces-may be fixed to the hollow tube 39 by any suitable means well known to the art but are herein preferably welded to said hollow tube. The hollow tube 39 is supported at its rearward end in the support means 35 extending rearwardly from the motor I!) and is held thereto by means of pins 45 which pass through the upwardly extending member 42. Said hollow tube is supported near its forward end on the support means 34 extending from the 5 cutter frame I I, by means of a depending portion 58 which fits into a guide 46a formed in said support means.
A member 41 is fixed to the forward end of the hollow tube 39 by means of pins 48, which pass through said member and the upwardly extending member 42, and extends upwardly from said hollow tube. A T shaped guide strip 49 is pivotally mounted on the top end of the member 91 and extends rearwardly therefrom. This guide strip is adapted to engage a groove 5| in the top portion of the movable frame 31 to support said movable frame for movement along the hollow tube 39 and hold said movable frame in a stationary position with respect to the turntable 4. The rearward end of the T shaped guide strip 49 is threaded and is keyed within an upwardly extending portion 52 of the support means 35. This guide strip is held to the upwardly extending portion 52 by means of nuts 53 threaded on the threaded portion of the T shaped guide strip 59 and abutting each side of the upwardly extending portion 52 of the support means 35.
The movable frame 31 provides a bearing support and housing for the gear mechanism for the extensible and retractable cutting element 1 and is provided with a bearing support 56 which bears on the top portion of the upwardly extending member 52 and is slidable therealong. This movable frame also has bearing support on the guide pieces 44 at each side thereof and gibs 54 and 55 are fixed to the under portion of said movable frame and engage the under portion of the guide pieces 44. It may thus be seen that the movable frame 31 is supported for slidable movement on and along the hollow tube 39 and on the member 42 extending upwardly from said hollow tube, and that said movable frame is guided by the T shaped guide strip 49 at its top portion and the guide pieces 44 and gibs 54 and 55 at its lower portion.
Referring now in particular to the cutter bar 38 and means for supporting said cutter bar in the movable frame 31 for movement about a transverse axis, said cutter bar is of an ordinary construction and is supported on a cutter bar support member 51 and extends forwardly therefrom. The cutter bar support member 51 is provided with an annular groove 58 which is engaged by an annular guide 59 at the inner side of the movable frame 31 so that said cutter bar supporting member and the cutter bar 38 may be pivotally moved with respect to said frame. The outer side of the cutter bar support member 51 is provided with a shoulder 60 which forms a support 60 for an arcuate rack 6| keyed to said shoulder and held to said cutter bar support by means of cap screws 62. This rack is engaged by a pinion 63 on a transverse shaft 64 journaled in the movable frame 31. The transverse shaft 64 is op- 65 eratively connectible with the motor H], in a manner which will hereinafter be more fully described, so that rotation of said shaft will move the cutter bar 38 about a transverse axis to raise or lower the forward end of said cutter bar.
The cutter bar 38 has a cutter chain 65 movable thereabout in a usual manner. The cutter chain 55 is driven by a sprocket 66 keyed on the inner end of a transverse shaft 61 coaxial with the pivotal axis of the cutter bar support mem- 7 5 ber 51 and journaled within a member 68 fixed to said cutter bar support member. The shaft 61 has a bevel gear 69 fixed thereon for rotating said shaft. This bevel gear is driven by a bevel pinion II keyed on a sleeve I2 which in turn is driven from the motor I8 in a manner which will hereinafter be more fully described.
Referring now in particular to the means for movingthe movable frame 31 along the rack 4i and extending or retracting the cutting element 1, a pair of sprockets I3 are provided which engage the pins 43 on each side of the upwardly extending member 42. These sprockets are integral with each other and are keyed on a transverse shaft I4 journaled in the movable frame 31. A spur gear is keyed on the transverse shaft I4 for driving said shaft from the motor I8 in a manner which will hereinafter be described so that rotation of the sprockets I3 will cause movement of the movable frame 31 along the rack M.
Referring now in particular to the means for driving the mechanism for raising and lowering the cutter bar 33 and extending and retracting said cutter bar and driving the cutter chain 65 from the motor I8, said motor is provided with a rearwardly extending motor shaft 11 having a pinion I8 freely mounted thereon and operatively connectible therewith by means of a clutch F6 in a usual manner. The pinion I8 meshes with and drives an idler gear I9 on a stud 88 supported on the support means 35. The idler gear 19 meshes with and drives a spur gear 8| keyed on a longitudinally extending shaft 82 journaled in the support means 35 near its rearward end and extending forwardly therefrom and journaled in the member 81 at its forward end. The longitudinally extending shaft 82 is provided with splines 83 on each side thereof (see Figs. 6 and 7) A splined sleeve 84 is splined on the shaft 82 inside of the sleeve I2. The sleeve I2 is splined on and driven from the splined sleeve 84 and extends forwardly therefrom. Thus rotation of the longitudinal shaft 82 causes rotation of the splined sleeve 88 which drives the sleeve I2 and bevel pinion II and thus drives the bevel gear 69 and cutter chain 65.
The sleeve 12 has a spur gear 85 cut integral therewith adjacent the forward end of the bevel pinion II. A sleeve 87 is freely mounted on the sleeve I2 adjacent the forward end thereof for rotatable movement with respect thereto. A bevel pinion 88 is keyed on the sleeve 8'! and meshes with and is driven from the bevel gear 69. A spur gear 89 is cut integral with the sleeve 8'! and is driven from the bevel pinion 88. The spur gear 85 meshes with and drives a spur gear 90 freely mounted on a longitudinally extending shaft 9| disposed above said spur gear. Like wise, the spur gear 89 meshes with and drives a spur gear 92 freely mounted on the longitudinally extending shaft 9|. I
Suitable means are provided so that either of the spur gears 98 or 92 may drive the longitudinally extending shaft SI so that the direction of rotation of said shaft may be reversed without reversing the motor ID. Said means herein comprises suitable clutch means, herein shown as cone clutches 93 and 9d, selectively engageable with the spur gears 88 and 92, respectively, by
means of a suitable system of levers not herein shown since it is no part of my invention. The clutches 93 and 94 are connected together so that only one gear may be operatively connected with the shaft ill at a time.
A spur gear 95 is fixed on the forward end of the longitudinally extending shaft 8 I. This gear meshes with and drives a spur gear 91 on a longitudinally extending shaft 98. The longitudinally extending shaft 98 is journaled in the movable frame 31 and has a worm 99 cut integral therewith. The worm 99 meshes with and drives a worm gear I60 keyed on a hub ll of a spur gear I02 freely mounted on the transverse shaft 68. The spur gear I82 meshes with and drives the spur gear I5 keyed on the transverse shaft I8 for driving the sprockets I3 and thus moving the movable frame 31 and cutter bar 38 along the rack 4 I.
It may thus be seen that the sprockets I8 may be driven from the motor I8 in opposite directions without reversal of said motor by means of engaging either the spur gear 98 or the spur gear 92 with the shaft 9I by means of the clutch 93 or 94. Thus a means has been provided for moving the cutter bar 38 into the coal to cut a vertical kerf therein and for removing said cutter bar from the coal after the kerf has been cut.
Likewise, the spur gears 85 and 89 mesh with and drive spur gears I84 and I85 freely mounted on a longitudinally extending shaft I86 beneath the longitudinal shaft 82. Suitable means are provided for operatively connecting either the spur gear I84 or spur gear I85 with the shaft I86 for rotating said shaft in opposite directions, which means herein comprise cone clutches I81 and I88 selectively engageable with said respective gears. The clutches I 81 and I88 are connected together so that only one gear may be operatively connected with the shaft I86 at a time and are operated by a suitable system of levers in a usual manner.
The longitudinally extending shaft I86 is journaled'in the movable frame 31 and has a worm I89 on its forward end. The worm I89 meshes with and drives worm gear I I8 keyed on a vertical shaft III near its lower end. A Worm II 2 is cut integral with the vertical shaft I I I near its upper end and meshes with and drives a worm gear I I3 keyed on the transverse shaft 64. Thus rotation of the worm gear H3 drives the transverse shaft 64 which drives the spur pinion 63 and raises or lowers the cutter bar 38 about the axis of the transverse shaft 6?.
Thus it may be seen that the transverse shaft 64 and pinion 63 may be driven from the motor I8 in opposite directions without reversal of the motor by selectively connecting either the spur gear I04 or spur gear I85 to the longitudinal shaft I 85 by means of the respective cone clutch I81 or I88 to move the cutter bar 38 about the axis of the transverse shaft 61 and raise or lower the forward end of said cutter bar to feed said cutter bar vertically into the coal for cutting a vertical kerf in the coal face.
It may also be seen that the cutter bar 38 may be fed vertically or longitudinally from the motor I 8 and that the cutter chain 65 may be driven from said motor during said vertical or longitudin'almovement of the cutter bar 38 in all position-s of the movable frame 31 and cutter bar 38 with respect to the horizontal cutting element 5.
While I have herein shown and described one form in which my invention may be embodied, it will be understood that the construction thereof and the arrangement of the various parts may be altered without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
