This invention relates to improvements in miningmachines and has for its principal object to provide an improved mining machine of the shearng type adapted to make a vertical or shearing cut in the mine wall extendingfrom the mineibottom to the mine roof.

Referring now in particular to the drawings,'I have provided a cutting element generally indicated at reciprocably movable inwa guide frame 11 pivoted'at itsrearward end to a-base frame 1-2 which is'supported on tal cut and comprises a cutter bar 17 of a rela-.
tively narrow and elongated form, reciprocably movable in the guide frame 11 and having an endless cutter chain 18 -movable there about. The cutter chain 18is driven from a motor 19 hereinpreferably shown as an 8160'. 'tric motor mounted on a supporting frame 21 and movable with the cutter bar 17 The cutter bar 17 is supported near its rearward end on the supporting frame 21 which frame also serves to support the feeding and cutting drive gearing, and has slidable connection with a vertically adjustable support 23 near its forward end. Reciprocable movement of the cutting element 10 and supporting frame 21 is obtained by sprockets 25, 25, which mesh with racks 26, 26, on the top and bottom sides of the stationary guide frame 11. Said sprockets are driven by the motor 19 at one speed in one direction and at a different speed I in the opposite direction by a suitable-gear reductionwhich is as follows:
A motorpinion'27 drives a gear 28 fixed to thehub of a bevel pinion 29 to drive said bevel pinion. The bevel pinion 29-meshes with and drives a bevel gear 30 on a transverse shaft 31. A worm 32 isfixed on said. shaft and driven thereby. The worm 32. drives a worm gear '33 on an upright shaft. 34. 'A pinion 35 is keyed onthe outer end of p the upright shaft 34 and meshes with and drives an. internal gear 36 freely mounted on an upright shaft 37. A suitable clutch meansis provided to operatively connect the internal gear 36 with the upright shaft 37. Said clutchmeans is generally indicated at '38 and is notherein shown in detail since it is no partof my invention. The sprockets 25, 25, are keyed to the shaft '37 near opposite ends thereof and mesh with the racks 26 to move the cutting element 10 and supporting frame 21 along the guide frame 11., A spur gear 40 is-keyed onthe upright shaft 34 and meshes with and drives a spur gear 41 freely mounted on the upright shaft 37. A clutch member 42 is provided to operatively connect the spur gear 41 with the upright shaft 37. Said clutch member is of an ordinary type and is interconnected with the clutch means 38 in a usual manner, not herein shown since it is no part of my invention, so that the internal gear 36 is disconnected from the shaft 37 when the spur gear 41 is connected with said shaft and vice-versa. It may now be seen that the cutting element and supporting frame 21 may be moved forwardly on the guide frame 11 at a slow speed through the pinion and internal gear 36 or may be moved rearwardly on said guide frame at a higher speed through the spur" gears 40 and 41 Pivotal movement of the cutting element IOabout the axis of pivotal connection of the guide frame 11 to the base frame 12 is controlled by means of the vertically adjustable support on the forward portion of said base frame. Said vertically adjustable support includes racks 44 pivoted to the base frame 12 adjacent the forward end thereof on opposite sides of the cutter bar 17. The racks 44 are guided in a frame member 45 which is fixed to the guide frame 11. The frame member 45 is provided with a portion which passes through a slot 46 in the cutter bar 17 and is slidably connectible therewith. Pinions 47, 47, mounted in the frame member 45 mesh with the racks 44 for moving said frame member along said racks upon rotation thereof. The frame member 45 holds the racks 44, 44, in a position substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the guide frame 11. The pinions 47 47 arekeyed on a shaft 48 journaled in the frame member 45 and are driven by said shaft. The shaft 48 is rotated from the motor 19 by means of a telescopic connecting shaft 51 and a suitable geared reduction of any ordinary type not herein shown since it is no part of my invention. Rotation of the pinions 47 47 therefore raises or lowers the forward end of the cutter bar 17 by moving the cutting element 10 and guide frame 11 about the axis of pivotal connection of the guide frame 11 to the base frame 12, which axis is disposed on the rearward portion of said base frame.
The turntable 13 comprises a circular plate 55 on the bottom portion of the base frame 12 near the central portion thereof pivoted to a corresponding octagonal plate 56 on the top portion of the truck 14 by means of a length. The purpose in so arranging said base frame on the turntable 13 is to prevent overbalancing of the machine when the cutter bar 17 is making a cut from the mine roof to the mine bottom and is sumped into the coal to its entire length in any position in which said base frame may be turned on the turntable 13.
The truck 14 is driven from the rearward end of the motor 19 by means of a coupling pin 61 having driving connection with said motor and a worm 62 journaled in a power bracket 63. The worm 62 drives a worm gear 64 on a transverse shaft 65. A sprocktionwith the rearward truck wheels 16 and axles 15 of the truck 14 bymeans of a driven sprocket 71 and drive chain 72. The forward and rearward truck wheels 16 are connected together by means of a drive chain 73, driving sprocket 74 and driven sprocket 75.
Figure 6 shows the device of my invention on the mine rails in position to make a vertical shearing cut in the mine wall at right angles to the mine rails. The cutting element 10 is turned at right angles to the truck 14 and the forward end of the cutter bar 17 is raised to a position adjacent the mine roof bymeans of the vertically adjustable support 23 and the racks 44 and pinions 47. A jack 76 on the rearward portion of the guide frame 11 is engaged withthe mine roof to hold the cutting element- 10 in a steady position while cutting. Thetelescopic eonnectingshaft 51 and the coupling pin 61 are disconnected from the motor 19. The cutting element 10 is then moved forwardly on the guide frame 11 to sump the cutter bar 17 into the coal, the cutter chain 18 being simultaneously driven about said cutter bar by means of a sprocket 77 keyed on the transverse shaft 31. \Vhen the cutting element 10 reaches its extreme forward position on the guide frame 11, said guide frame is lowered by means of the vertically adjustable support 23 until the forward portion of the cutter bar 17 is adjacent the mine bottom. The cutting element 10 is then moved rearwardly on the guide frame 11 to Withdraw the cutter bar 17 from the coal, said cutter bar completing its shearing1 cut as it is being withdrawn from the coa It may now be seen that I have provided a mining machine of the class described mounted on a turntable which in turn is mounted on a self-propelledttruck so that said mining machine may be moved about from cutting place to cutting place and may cut a vertical kerf at various angles with respect to a mine wall, and that said machine is of a compact design and of a low element is fed into the coal on a rack and withdrawn therefrom on said rack, which rack is mounted on a guide frame whichis pivoted at its rearward end and supported for vertical movement at its forward end so that the cutting element may be raised or lowered to cut from the mine roof to the mine bottom and be supported adjacent thelface of the coal.
While I have shown and described one form in which my invention may be embodied, it will be understood that the construction and arrangement of the various parts may be altered or changed without departingfrom the spirit or scopeof the in vention. Furthermore, I do not wish to be construed as limiting myself to the specific embodiment illustrated, excepting as it may be limited in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination with a mining machine of the class described, a truck, a pair of axles havingwheels thereon for supporting said truck a turntable supported on said truck, a base frame on said turntable, a guide frame pivoted for movement about a transverse axis disposed adjacent the rearward portion of said base frame, a reciprocating cutter frame movable in said guide frame, a motor on said cutter frame, a cutting element on said reciprocating cutter frame comprising a cutter bar having a cutter chain movable thereabout arranged to cut a substantially vertical kerf,
supporting means on the forward portion ofsaid base frame for pivoting said guide frame about its vertical axis to raise or lower said cutter bar, said base frame being so arranged on said turntable that said motor is substantially rearward of said forwardmost truck axles and forward of said rearwardmost truck axles when said cutting element is in a forward cutting position on, said guide frame.
2. In combination-with a mining machine of the class described,:a truck frame, a pair of axles having wheels thereon for supporting said truck frame for movement about a mine, a turntable supported on said truck frame, an elongated base frame supported on said turntable, a guide frame supported on said base frame for pivotal movement about a transverse axis adjacent the rearward end thereof, a cutter frame reciprocably movable within said guide frame, a -motor on said cutter frame, a vertically arranged cutter bar proturntable that said motor is substantially rearward of said forwardmost truck axles and forward of said rearwardmost truck axles 1 when said cutting element is in a forward position on said guide frame.
3. In a mining machine of the class described, a truck frame,-a pair of axles having wheels thereon for supporting said truck frame for movementabout a mine, a turntable on said truckhaving its axis of pivotal connection to said truck spaced substantially midway between said axles, an elongated base frame on said turntable extending beyond the forward and rearward extremities thereof, a-guide frame mounted on said base frame for pivotal movement about a transverse axis at one extremity of said base frame substantially beyond said rearwardmost truck axles .i
when said base frame extends longitudinally of said truck, a vertically disposed cutting element on said reciprocating cutter frame comprisinga cutter bar having a cutter chain movable thereabout, supporting means for moving said cutter bar about the axis of pivotal connection of said guide frame to said base frame for elevating or lowering said cutter bar on the end of said elongated base frame opposite from the axis of pivotal connection of said guide frame to said elongated base frame, said support means being disposed substantially beyond said forwardmost truck axles when said base frame is positioned so as to extend longitudinally of said truck and adjacent the forward portion of said cutter bar when said cutter bar is in a retracted position on said guide frame, a motor, means driven from the forward portion of said motor for reciprocably moving said cutter bar along said mainframe, and means driven'from the rearward portionofsaid motor for moving said truck along the mine rails, said motor beingso arranged on said turntable that said motor is substantially in a central position between said truck axles when said cutting element is in its forwardmost cutting position on said guide frame.
