To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. STINE, a resident of Osceola Mills,in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have in= vented a new and useful Improvement in Mining-Machines and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription thereof.
My invention relates to mining1nacl1i11esthat is, machines for undercutting coal in mines-and has special reference to machines of this kind operated by electric or like power obtained from a motor on a separate movable car, apparatus for this purpose being shown in Letters Patent No. 411,200, granted to E. M. Lechner on September 17, 1889.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction ofthis class of machinery where the cutting apparatus is at the forward end of the carriage and is operated from a cross-shaft at the rear end of the carriage by drivng-chains.
The apparatus formingthe subjectmatter of the present application comprises certain improvements in the driving and feeding mechanism, which will be hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention,l will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig-3 is a rear view of the machine, and Fig. 4. is a side view of the rear part of the machine.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts tionary bed is the cross bar or brace d and at the rear end thereof the cross-bar or brace d, which bars,- with the side bars or housings c, form the body of the stationary bed. Mounted in the stand or braokete, at the rear of the bed a and at one side thereof, is the vertical shaft e, which carries at its upper end the grooved pulley f, around which the driving-rope from the electric motor on the separate movable car or carriage passes, so as 6o to rotate this vertical shaft e. The shaft e has the bevel-pinion e2, which meshes with the bevel-pinion g on the end of the grooved shaft g, this grooved shaft being mounted in the stand-bearing e and in a box or bearing g2 at the forward end of the bed, and the shaft extending longitudinally of the bed and, as preferred by me, along one side of the bed above one of the housings. The sliding frame or carriage b has the side bars b running in 7c the housings c, and at the rear end of the carriage has the plate h, on which the power mechanism is mounted. It has at the forward end thereof the cutter-bar or other cutting mechanism c, and in the construction shown has back of the same the forward chain-shaft 1l', which connects with the cutterbar by the cog-gearing i2 713.
At the rear of the machine, and on the same horizontal plane as the grooved sha-ft g, is the 8o cross-shaft 7c, which is mounted in bearings k and carries at the end, near the grooved shaft g, the bevel-gear 7c?. The bevel-gear 7a2 meshes with the bevel gear l, which lits around the grooved shaft g and engages therewith by a feather, said bevel-gear being journaled in a bearing l extending up from the plate 7L, and the bevel-gear Zmoving with the carriage h and acting to transmit the power from the grooved shaft gto the cross-shaft k. 9o Mounted on said plate, but back of and below the cross-shaft 7c, is the` chain-driving shaft m, which is driven from the shaft 7c by the small pinion k3 meshing with the large pinion m on said shaft m. The said shaftm carries a series of sprockets, over which pass the driving-chains n, which extend to the forA ward end of the carriage and pass around sprockets on the forward chain-shaft i', so transmitting power to said shaft and enabling 1 oo it through the piuions i3 to drive the cutter-bar.
In order to feed` the machine forward and draw it back after the making of the out, I employa rotating screw-bar p, which extends longitudinally of the machine and moves with the traveling carriage, the screw-bar engagin with a nut di on the forward cross-brace d of the stationary bed and being mounted at ,its rear end in asuitable bearing je on the plate 7L. In order to rotate this screw-shaft to feed the carriage forward, I employ the feeding worm-gear 0', and to rotate it to draw the carriage back I employ the worm-gear s, which worin-gears are mounted loosely on the rear end of the screw-bar j), and are thrown into engagement therewith by the clutoht, operated by the clutch-lever t. The worm-gear r, for feeding the carriage forward, is engaged by a worm r on the chain-driving shaft fm, and the worm-gear s, for withdrawing or receding the carriage,is engaged by the wormgear s' on the cross-shaft 7a, said worm being o f large diameter, so that it meshes with the worm-gear S, even though the cross-shaft 7c extends on a higher horizontal plane than the cross-shaft m. rlhe pitch of these worms and worm-gears is such as to provide a com para-- tively slow feeding action from the slowerrunning shaft in and a comparatively rapid receding action from the shaft 7.2, which generally rotates at about four limes the speed of the shaft m.
In the operation of the machine constructed as above described the bed of the machine is placed opposite the body of coal to be out and the driving-rope from the electric motor or other power apparatus on the movable car is placed around the pulley f and the motor adjusted so as to bring the proper tension on the rope. The power is transmitted from this rope, through the pulley j", to the vertical sl1aftc,and thence to the grooved shaft g, and by the bevelgeari ng Z kl to the cross-shaft 7u, from Said shaft by gearing 7e3 nt to the chaindriving shaft m, and thence by the chains to the cutter-bar, as above described, the cutterbar being rotated at a high speed, and, in the apparatus shown, cutting in an upward direction, which is found very desirable in such machines.

As soon as the carriage is drawn back the machine is moved the proper distance to make another cut, the driving-rope adjusted to the proper tension, and the operation repeated.
