Abstract
236,569. Berthiez, C. July 2, 1924, [Convention date]. Planing.-In a planing &c. machine of the kind in which an additional drive is operative during the cutting stroke, the additional drive is controlled by auxiliary dogs adjustably attached to the main dogs which control the reversing motion, the auxiliary dogs acting, through link work, on a clutch sleeve connected by positive gearing with an electric motor. A rack on the table a is engaged by a pinion o<3> driven by gearing o<1> from a shaft d having fast pulleys d<2>, d<4> thereon for giving slow forward and quick return traverses. The crossed and open belts are connected to a lay-shaft (not shown) driven by a belt from a pulley, rotated by gearing n<1> from a motor n, and are controlled by forks b<5> actuated by cam-slots in a plate b<4> reciprocated at each end of the traverse by a link b<2> connected to a lever b pivoted at b<1> and having rollers b<6>, b<7> engaged by the main dogs a<1>, a<2> on the table. A lever g, also pivoted at b<1>, has an arm g<1> connected by a link g<2> to a rocking shaft h<1> carrying an arm h<3> which actuates a link i having a yielding coupling i<2> and connected to a shaft j' which rocks a fork k<2> engaging a sleeve k. The sleeve k, which is connected to the gear-wheel l and pulley l<1>, is loosely mounted on the shaft d and has clutch teeth which engage teeth on a sloove m keyed to the shaft. The teeth on the sleeve m have rollers mounted between them in order to allow the teeth k to engage them readily In operation, the table commences the cutting stroke by means of the pulley d<2> only, but after travelling about 50 mm. the auxiliary dog e<2> engages a projection f on the lever g to rock the fork k and clutch the motor directly to the shaft d. The sizes of the pulleys l<1>, d<2>, are so arranged that the direct drive rotates the shaft d slightly less rapidly than does the pulley d<2> to facilitate the engagement of the clutch, the belt slipping on the pulley d<2> during cutting. The yielding coupling i<2> also facilitates engagement of the clutch and the proportions and pivotal points of the links are so chosen that the clutch is retained in the closed position. Shortly before the end of the cutting stroke a roller g<3> on the lever g encounters the auxiliary dog e<1>, which disengages the clutch and allows the belt drive to complete the stroke and return the table. Towards the end of the return stroke the auxiliary dog e<2> tilts the projection f against the action of a spring f<2>, allowing the dog to ride over the projection until the table has been reversed by the main dog a<2>. The reversing link b<2> may be operated by a handle b<3> and a handle h<4> and pedal h<5> are provided on the clutch-operating lever h. Specification 171,770 is referred to.
