Abstract
644,425. Operating clutches; change-speed gear. B.S.A. TOOLS, Ltd., and OGILVIE, W. Aug. 16, 1947, No. 22812. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] In a centreless grinding machine having a control wheel with a non-circular periphery, the grinding operation on a work piece being completed during one revolution of the control wheel, the rotation of the control wheel is stopped after one revolution to permit feeding of a work piece to the machine by hand. The control wheel 4 is mounted on a shaft 7; a sleeve 15 is slidably keyed to a sleeve 11 secured to the shaft 7 so as to be movable longitudinally. The sleeve 15 is urged by a spring 72 to its right-hand position in which dog teeth 17 on the sleeve engage dog teeth 27 on a worm wheel 25 meshing with a driving worm 26. The sleeve 15 carries a face cam 20 which co-operates with a pin 51 to move the sleeve 15 to the left thus disengaging the teeth 17, 27 and stopping the rotation after one revolution. To initiate the next revolution, the pin 51 is withdrawn, against loading spring 54, by means of a chain :57, link 60, lever 61, push rod 63 and knob 64. By means of a handle 47 the sleeve 15 can be moved, against the spring 72, into its extreme left-hand position, in which dog teeth 18 on the sleeve engage dog teeth 31 on a helical gear 29 meshing with a driving gear 30, whereby the control wheel can be rotated faster during trueing operations.
